The Durga Suktam is among the oldest hymns to the divine feminine in human civilization. It appears in both the Rigveda and the Taittiriya Aranyaka. The hymn invokes Durga through Agni (fire), the Vedic intermediary between humans and gods. The very concept of 'Durga' as the goddess who carries us across impossible dangers originates from this suktam — making it the foundational text of all Durga worship.

This suktam contains the verse 'Sa Nah Parshad Ati Durgani Vishva Naveva Sindhum' — 'May she carry us across ALL dangers like a boat across the ocean.' The metaphor is powerful: no matter how vast the ocean of troubles, the goddess IS the boat. Vedic priests have chanted this suktam during fire rituals for over 3000 years — the unbroken chain of recitation from the Rigvedic period to today makes it one of the oldest continuously performed religious practices in human history.

తామగ్నివర్ణాం తపసా జ్వలన్తీం వైరోచనీం కర్మఫలేషు జుష్టామ్ । దుర్గాం దేవీం శరణమహం ప్రపద్యే సుతరసి తరసే నమః ॥
Tamagnivarnam tapasa jvalantim vairochanim karmaphaleshu jushtam Durgam devim sharanamaham prapadye sutarasi tarase namah
అర్థం:अग्निवर्णा, तप से ज्वलित, वैरोचनी, कर्मफलों के लिए सेविता — उस दुर्गा देवी की मैं शरण लेता हूँ; हे पार उतारने वाली! हमें भवसागर से पार करो।
అగ్నే త్వం పారయా నవ్యో అస్మాన్ స్వస్తిభిరతి దుర్గాణి విశ్వా । పూశ్చ పృథ్వీ బహులా న ఉర్వీ భవా తోకాయ తనయాయ శంయోః ॥

అర్థం:हे अग्ने! सदा-नूतन होकर, अपने कल्याणकारी आशीषों से हमें समस्त दुर्गम कठिनाइयों के पार ले जाओ; हमारा नगर विस्तृत-समृद्ध हो, हमारी सन्तति सुखी रहे।
విశ్వాని నో దుర్గహా జాతవేదః సిన్ధుం న నావా దురితాతిపర్షి । అగ్నే అత్రివన్మనసా గృణానోఽస్మాకం బోధ్యవితా తనూనామ్ ॥
Vishvani no durgaha jatavedah sindhum na nava duritatiparshi Agne atrivanmanasa grinanosmakam bodhyavita tanunam
అర్థం:हे जातवेदा, समस्त दुर्गों (कठिनाइयों) का नाश करने वाले! जैसे नौका से सिन्धु पार किया जाता है, वैसे हमें सब दुरितों से पार उतारो।
పృతనాజితం సహమానముగ్రమగ్నిం హువేమ పరమాత్సధస్థాత్ । స నః పర్షదతి దుర్గాణి విశ్వా క్షామద్దేవో అతి దురితాత్యగ్నిః ॥
