The worship of Satyanarayan and its accompanying Katha are described in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, where Lord Vishnu, in answer to Narada's compassion for suffering humanity, prescribes this simple vrat for the fulfilment of wishes in the Kali age. This aarti, sung at the close of the Katha, recounts the Lord's appearances to the poor brahmin, the Bhil woodcutter, King Chandrachuda and the merchant, and is performed in countless Hindu homes on full-moon days and joyous occasions.

The Katha tells that a wealthy merchant who vowed to perform the Satyanarayan Puja forgot his promise after his wishes were granted, and so was struck by ruin and false imprisonment; only when he and his family resumed the worship with full faith was his fortune, his ships and his family restored, demonstrating the fruit of honouring one's vow to the Lord of Truth.

અર્થ:रत्नजड़ित सिंहासन पर तुम्हारी अद्भुत छवि सुशोभित है; नारद जी आरती उतारते हैं और घण्टा-ध्वनि गूँजती है।
પ્રગટ ભયે કલિ-કારણ, દ્વિજ કો દરસ દિયો । બૂઢ़ો બ્રાહ્મણ બનકર, કંચન-મહલ કિયો ॥ ૐ જય લક્ષ્મીરમણા ॥

અર્થ:कलियुग के जीवों के कल्याण हेतु तुम प्रकट हुए और ब्राह्मण को दर्शन दिया, वृद्ध ब्राह्मण का रूप धारण कर उसकी कुटिया को स्वर्ण-महल बना दिया।
દુર્બલ ભીલ કઠારો, જિન પર કૃપા કરી । ચન્દ્રચૂડ़ એક રાજા, જિનકી વિપતિ હરી ॥ ૐ જય લક્ષ્મીરમણા ॥
Durbala bheela katharo, jina para kripa kari Chandrachooda eka raja, jinaki vipati hari Om Jai Lakshmiramana
અર્થ:तुमने दुर्बल भील लकड़हारे पर कृपा की और राजा चन्द्रचूड़ की विपत्ति को दूर किया।
વૈશ્ય મનોરથ પાયો, શ્રદ્ધા તજ દીન્હી । સો ફલ ભોગ્યો પ્રભુ જી, ફિર સ્તુતિ કીન્હી ॥ ૐ જય લક્ષ્મીરમણા ॥
Vaishya manoratha paayo, shraddha taja deenhi So phala bhogyo prabhu ji, phira stuti keenhi Om Jai Lakshmiramana
અર્થ:जब वैश्य ने मनोरथ पाकर भी श्रद्धा (व्रत) त्याग दी, तो उसने उसका फल भोगा, हे प्रभु, और फिर तुम्हारी स्तुति की।
ભાવ-ભક્તિ કે કારણ, છિન-છિન રૂપ ધર્યો । શ્રદ્ધા-ધારણ કીન્હી, તિનકો કાજ સર્યો ॥ ૐ જય લક્ષ્મીરમણા ॥
Bhaava-bhakti ke kaarana, chhina-chhina roopa dharyo Shraddha-dhaarana keenhi, tinako kaaja saryo Om Jai Lakshmiramana
અર્થ:भाव और भक्ति के कारण तुमने क्षण-क्षण में रूप धारण किए; जिसने श्रद्धा धारण की, उसका कार्य सिद्ध हो गया।
ગ્વાલ-બાલ સંગ રાજા, વન મેં ભક્તિ કરી । મનવાંછિત ફલ દીન્હો, દીનદયાલ હરી ॥ ૐ જય લક્ષ્મીરમણા ॥
Gvaala-baala sanga raja, vana mein bhakti kari Manavaanchhita phala deenho, deenadayaala hari Om Jai Lakshmiramana
અર્થ:राजा ने ग्वाल-बालों के संग वन में तुम्हारी भक्ति की, और हे दीनदयाल हरी, तुमने उन्हें मनवांछित फल दिए।
ચઢ़ત પ્રસાદ સવાયો, કદલી ફલ મેવા । ધૂપ-દીપ-તુલસી સે, રાજી સત્યદેવા ॥ ૐ જય લક્ષ્મીરમણા ॥
Chadhata prasaada savaayo, kadali phala meva Dhoopa-deepa-tulasi se, raaji Satyadeva Om Jai Lakshmiramana
અર્થ:तुम्हें सवाया प्रसाद, केला, फल और मेवा चढ़ाया जाता है; धूप, दीप और तुलसी से सत्यदेव प्रसन्न होते हैं।

श्री सत्यनारायण जी की आरती જપ વિધિ
This aarti is performed after completing the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha. Offer it before an image of Lord Satyanarayan (Vishnu) with a lit ghee or camphor lamp, having prepared the traditional prasad of sapaada (savaya) sheera/panjiri, banana, fruits and tulsi. Sing with devotion while circling the lamp clockwise and ringing a bell. Distribute the prasad to all present and remember to keep one's vows truthfully, which is the heart of this worship.
