In the Prathama Charita of the Devi Mahatmya, at the end of a cosmic cycle the universe becomes a single ocean and Vishnu lies in yogic sleep upon Ananta-Shesha. From the wax of his ears arise two terrible asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha, who rush to slay Brahma seated on the lotus from Vishnu's navel. Unable to wake Vishnu, Brahma extols the Goddess of Sleep (Yoganidra) with this hymn, beginning 'Tvam svaha tvam svadha.' Pleased, she withdraws from Vishnu's body; he awakens and, after a five-thousand-year battle, slays the two demons.

Tradition holds that just as Brahma was delivered from the unassailable demons Madhu and Kaitabha the very moment the Goddess was praised, a devotee who recites this first stuti with faith is freed from overwhelming, seemingly invincible troubles, and the 'sleep of delusion' clouding the mind is lifted into spiritual awakening.

ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮੋਵਾਚ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਸ੍ਵਾਹਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਸ੍ਵਧਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਹਿ ਵਸ਼ਟ੍ਕਾਰਃ ਸ੍ਵਰਾਤ੍ਮਿਕਾ । ਸੁਧਾ ਤ੍ਵਮਕ੍ਸ਼ਰੇ ਨਿਤ੍ਯੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਧਾ ਮਾਤ੍ਰਾਤ੍ਮਿਕਾ ਸ੍ਥਿਤਾ ॥

ਅਰਥ:ब्रह्मा बोले — आप स्वाहा हैं, आप स्वधा हैं; आप ही वषट्कार और स्वर की आत्मा हैं। हे नित्ये अक्षरे! आप सुधा हैं; आप ॐकार की तीन मात्राओं रूप में और उस नित्य अर्धमात्रा रूप में स्थित हैं जो विशेष रूप से उच्चारित नहीं की जा सकती। हे देवी! आप ही संध्या, सावित्री और देवताओं की परा जननी हैं। आपसे ही यह विश्व धारण किया जाता है, आपसे ही जगत् रचा जाता है; हे देवी! आपसे ही इसका पालन होता है और अंत में आप ही इसका भक्षण करती हैं। हे जगन्मयी! सृष्टि के समय आप सृष्टिरूपा, पालन में स्थितिरूपा और जगत् के अंत में संहाररूपा हैं। आप महाविद्या, महामाया, महामेधा, महास्मृति, महामोह, महादेवी और महेश्वरी हैं। आप श्री, ईश्वरी, ह्री और बोधलक्षणा बुद्धि हैं; आप लज्जा, पुष्टि, तुष्टि, शांति और क्षमा हैं। आप उच्च-नीच सबकी परा हैं; आप ही परमेश्वरी हैं। हे सर्वात्मिके! जो कुछ भी वस्तु कहीं भी है, सत् हो या असत्, उन सबकी जो शक्ति है, वह आप ही हैं; फिर मैं आपकी पूर्ण स्तुति कैसे कर सकता हूँ? इन दोनों दुर्जय असुरों मधु और कैटभ को मोहित कीजिए, और जगत्स्वामी अच्युत विष्णु को शीघ्र जगाइए।

ardhamātrā sthitā nityā yānuccāryāviśeṣataḥ tvameva sandhyā sāvitrī tvaṃ devi jananī parā
ਤ੍ਵਯੈਤਦ੍ਧਾਰ੍ਯਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਂ ਤ੍ਵਯੈਤਤ੍ ਸ੍ਰਿਜ੍ਯਤੇ ਜਗਤ੍ । ਤ੍ਵਯੈਤਤ੍ ਪਾਲ੍ਯਤੇ ਦੇਵਿ ਤ੍ਵਮਤ੍ਸ੍ਯਨ੍ਤੇ ਚ ਸਰ੍ਵਦਾ ॥
tvayaitaddhāryate viśvaṃ tvayaitat sṛjyate jagat tvayaitat pālyate devi tvamatsyante ca sarvadā
ਵਿਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼੍ਟੌ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼੍ਟਿਰੂਪਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਸ੍ਥਿਤਿਰੂਪਾ ਚ ਪਾਲਨੇ । ਤਥਾ ਸਂਹ੍ਰਿਤਿਰੂਪਾਨ੍ਤੇ ਜਗਤੋऽਸ੍ਯ ਜਗਨ੍ਮਯੇ ॥

tvaṃ śrīstvamīśvarī tvaṃ hrīstvaṃ buddhirbodhalakṣaṇā lajjā puṣṭistathā tuṣṭistvaṃ śāntiḥ kṣāntireva ca
ਪਰਾਪਰਾਣਾਂ ਪਰਮਾ ਤ੍ਵਮੇਵ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼੍ਵਰੀ । ਯਚ੍ਚ ਕਿਞ੍ਚਿਤ੍ਕ੍ਵਚਿਦ੍ਵਸ੍ਤੁ ਸਦਸਦ੍ਵਾਖਿਲਾਤ੍ਮਿਕੇ ॥

ਤਸ੍ਯ ਸਰ੍ਵਸ੍ਯ ਯਾ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਤਿਃ ਸਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਕਿਂ ਸ੍ਤੂਯਸੇ ਮਯਾ । ਮੋਹਯੈਤੌ ਦੁਰਾਧਰ੍ਸ਼ਾਵਸੁਰੌ ਮਧੁਕੈਟਭੌ । ਪ੍ਰਬੋਧਂ ਚ ਜਗਤ੍ਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ ਨੀਯਤਾਮਚ੍ਯੁਤੋ ਲਘੁ ॥

Sit facing east or north before an image of the Devi. Light a lamp and recite the hymn slowly, dwelling on the Mother as Mahamaya and Yoganidra. It is traditionally chanted at the opening of the first charita (Prathama Charita) of the Saptashati, whose presiding deity is Mahakali. After recitation, meditate silently on the Goddess as the one power within and behind all creation.
