Govinda is one of the most beloved names of Krishna, meaning the protector of cows, the Earth and the Vedas. Adi Shankaracharya, the great Advaita master, composed this Govindashtakam to reveal Krishna as both the formless Brahman of the Upanishads — Truth, Knowledge, Infinity — and the enchanting cowherd child of Vraja who ate butter, lifted Govardhana and danced on the serpent Kaliya. The hymn's eight verses are a rare and beautiful union of jnana and bhakti, and it remains distinct from the other Govindashtakam (beginning 'Chidanandakaram').

The final verse is itself the declared fruit: tradition holds that one who recites this Govindashtakam with the mind surrendered to Govinda is cleansed of all sins as if bathed in a nectar-ocean, and comes to realise the ever-blissful Govinda seated within the heart.

Meaning:ଗୋବିନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ, ପରମାନନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଣାମ କର — ଯେ ସତ୍ୟ, ଜ୍ଞାନ, ଅନନ୍ତ ଓ ନିତ୍ୟ; ଯେ ଆକାଶରେ ଅବଦ୍ଧ ହୋଇ ମଧ୍ୟ ପରମ ଆକାଶ; ଯେ ଅନାୟାସରେ ଗୋଷ୍ଠ ପ୍ରାଙ୍ଗଣରେ ବାଟୁଳି ବୁଲିବାରେ ଆନନ୍ଦିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତି, ତଥାପି ପରମ ସାଧନାର ଲକ୍ଷ୍ୟ; ଯେ ମାୟାରଚିତ ଅସଂଖ୍ୟ ରୂପରେ ପ୍ରକଟ ହୋଇ ମଧ୍ୟ ସ୍ୱୟଂ ନିରାକାର, ଯାହାଙ୍କ ସ୍ୱରୂପ ହିଁ ସମସ୍ତ ଭୁବନ; ଯେ ପୃଥିବୀର ନାଥ ଅଥଚ ଯାହାଙ୍କର କୌଣସି ନାଥ ନାହିଁ।

Meaning:ଗୋବିନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ, ପରମାନନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଣାମ କର — ଯେ ଗୋପାଳ, ଭୂଲୋକର ଲୀଳା ପାଇଁ ଗୋପ-ରୂପଧାରୀ, କୁଳର ଗୋପାଳ; ଯେ ଗୋପୀମାନଙ୍କ ସହ ଖେଳରେ ଗୋବର୍ଦ୍ଧନ ଧାରଣର ଲୀଳାରେ ଗୋପାଳମାନଙ୍କୁ ଆନନ୍ଦିତ କଲେ; ଯାହାଙ୍କ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ନାମ 'ଗୋବିନ୍ଦ'କୁ ଗାଈମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ ହମ୍ବାରବରେ ଡାକନ୍ତି, ଯେ ବହୁନାମ, ତଥାପି ଗୋପୀମାନଙ୍କ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରୁ ମଧ୍ୟ ଅତୀତ।

Meaning:ଗୋବିନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ, ପରମାନନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଣାମ କର — ଯେ ସ୍ନାନରେ ବ୍ୟସ୍ତ ଗୋପୀମାନଙ୍କ ବସ୍ତ୍ର ନେଇ ବୃକ୍ଷ ଉପରକୁ ଚଢ଼ିଗଲେ, ଏବଂ ଯେତେବେଳେ ସେମାନେ ଦିଗମ୍ବରା ହୋଇ ଆସିଲେ ସେତେବେଳେ ବସ୍ତ୍ର ଦେବାକୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପାଖକୁ ଡାକିଲେ; ଯେ ଶୋକ ଓ ମୋହର ଦ୍ୱନ୍ଦ୍ୱ ରହିତ ବୁଦ୍ଧସ୍ୱରୂପ, ବୁଦ୍ଧି ଭିତରେ ସ୍ଥିତ, ଯାହାଙ୍କ ଶରୀର କେବଳ ସତ୍ତାମାତ୍ର।

Meaning:ଗୋବିନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ, ପରମାନନ୍ଦଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଣାମ କର — ଯେ କାନ୍ତ, କାରଣମାନଙ୍କର କାରଣ, ଅନାଦିର ମଧ୍ୟ ଆଦି, ସ୍ୱୟଂ କାଳ ହୋଇ ମଧ୍ୟ ଅନାଭାସ; ଯେ ଯମୁନାରେ କାଳିୟର ମସ୍ତକ ଉପରେ ବାରମ୍ବାର ନୃତ୍ୟ କରନ୍ତି; ଯେ କାଳକଳାର ଅତୀତ କାଳ, ସମସ୍ତଙ୍କୁ ବ୍ୟାପ୍ତକାରୀ, କଳିଯୁଗର ଦୋଷର ନାଶକ, ତିନି କାଳର ଗତିର ହେତୁ।

It is an eight-verse Sanskrit hymn to Lord Krishna (Govinda) by Adi Shankaracharya, beginning 'Satyam jnanam anantam nityam'. It is distinctive for weaving Vedantic descriptions of the formless Absolute together with Krishna's childhood pastimes, each verse ending 'pranamata govindam paramanandam'.

It is traditionally ascribed to Adi Shankaracharya (8th century CE), the great Advaita Vedanta master, who composed many hymns blending philosophical depth with devotion. Note that another, different hymn beginning 'Chidanandakaram' is also called Govindashtakam.
