The stotra appears in the Siddheshwari Tantra as part of a dialogue between Shiva (Maheshwara) and Parvati (Uma). Moved by compassion for beings caught in the sufferings of worldly existence, Shiva reveals to the Goddess a hymn whose very purpose (apad-uddhara-hetukam) is to rescue devotees from every form of calamity. Each verse is a direct cry to the Divine Mother as the one and only refuge, culminating in the refrain 'Trahi Durge' — 'Save me, O Durga.'

Devotees through the ages have recited this hymn at moments of acute crisis — shipwreck, fire, attack by enemies, false imprisonment and sudden illness — and traditional accounts hold that those who called upon the Mother with even a single verse were unexpectedly delivered, the danger dissolving as if the Goddess herself had thrown them the 'boat of rescue' (nistara-nauka) the hymn describes.

namaste sharanye shive sanukampe namaste jagad-vyapike vishva-rupe | namaste jagad-vandya-padaravinde namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||1||
અર્થ:हे शरण देने वाली, हे कल्याणमयी और करुणामयी, आपको नमस्कार है; हे जगत् में व्याप्त रहने वाली, हे विश्वरूपिणी, आपको नमस्कार है। जिनके चरण-कमल समस्त जगत् के वन्दनीय हैं, हे जगत् को तारने वाली, मेरी रक्षा करो, हे दुर्गे!
નમસ્તે જગચ્ચિન્ત્યમાનસ્વરૂપે નમસ્તે મહાયોગિવિજ્ઞાનરૂપે। નમસ્તે નમસ્તે સદાનન્દરૂપે નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૨॥
namaste jagac-chintyamana-svarupe namaste maha-yogi-vijnana-rupe | namaste namaste sadananda-rupe namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||2||
અર્થ:जिनका स्वरूप जगत् की कल्पना से परे है, जो महायोगियों का विज्ञान-स्वरूप हैं, जो सदा आनन्दस्वरूपा हैं — उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार; हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
અનાથસ્ય દીનસ્ય તૃષ્ણાતુરસ્ય ભયાર્તસ્ય ભીતસ્ય બદ્ધસ્ય જન્તોઃ। ત્વમેકા ગતિર્દેવિ નિસ્તારકર્ત્રી નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૩॥
anathasya dinasya trishnaturasya bhayartasya bhitasya baddhasya jantoh | tvam eka gatir devi nistara-kartri namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||3||
અર્થ:अनाथ, दीन, तृष्णा से व्याकुल, भय से पीड़ित, डरे हुए और बन्धन में पड़े प्राणी के लिए, हे देवि, आप ही एकमात्र गति और उद्धार करने वाली हैं — हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
અરણ્યે રણે દારુણે શત્રુમધ્યે જલે સઙ્કટે રાજગેહે પ્રવાતે। ત્વમેકા ગતિર્દેવિ નિસ્તારહેતુ- ર્નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૪॥
aranye rane darune shatru-madhye jale sankate raja-gehe pravate | tvam eka gatir devi nistara-hetur namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||4||
અર્થ:वन में, युद्ध में, भयंकर शत्रुओं के बीच, जल में, सङ्कट में, राजभवन में और आँधी में — हे देवि, आप ही एकमात्र रक्षा का साधन हैं — हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
અપારે મહદુસ્તરેઽત્યન્તઘોરે વિપત્સાગરે મજ્જતાં દેહભાજામ્। ત્વમેકા ગતિર્દેવિ નિસ્તારનૌકા નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૫॥
apare mahad-ustare 'tyanta-ghore vipat-sagare majjatam deha-bhajam | tvam eka gatir devi nistara-nauka namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||5||
અર્થ:अपार, अत्यन्त दुस्तर और घोर विपत्ति-सागर में डूबते हुए देहधारियों के लिए, हे देवि, आप ही उद्धार की नौका हैं — हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
નમશ્ચણ્ડિકે ચણ્ડદોર્દણ્ડલીલા- સમુત્ખણ્ડિતાખણ્ડલાશેષશત્રોઃ। ત્વમેકા ગતિર્વિઘ્નસન્દોહહર્ત્રી નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૬॥
namash chandike chanda-dor-danda-lila- samutkhandita-khandalashesha-shatroh | tvam eka gatir vighna-sandoha-hartri namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||6||
અર્થ:हे चण्डिके, जिन्होंने अपनी प्रचण्ड भुजाओं की लीला से समस्त शत्रुओं को नष्ट कर डाला, आप ही विघ्नों के समूह को हरने वाली एकमात्र गति हैं — हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
ત્વમેકા સદારાધિતા સત્યવાદિ- ન્યનેકાખિલા ક્રોધના ક્રોધનિષ્ઠા। ઇડા પિઙ્ગલા ત્વં સુષુમ્ના ચ નાડી નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૭॥
tvam eka sadaradhita satya-vadiny aneka-akhila krodhana krodha-nishtha | ida pingala tvam sushumna cha nadi namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||7||
અર્થ:आप ही सदा आराधित, सत्यवादिनी हैं; आप ही इडा, पिङ्गला और सुषुम्ना नाड़ी हैं — हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
નમો દેવિ દુર્ગે શિવે ભીમનાદે સરસ્વત્યરુન્ધત્યમોઘસ્વરૂપે। વિભૂતિઃ સતાં કાલરાત્રિસ્વરૂપે નમસ્તે જગત્તારિણિ ત્રાહિ દુર્ગે॥૮॥
namo devi durge shive bhima-nade sarasvaty-arundhaty-amogha-svarupe | vibhutih satam kala-ratri-svarupe namaste jagat-tarini trahi durge ||8||
અર્થ:हे देवि दुर्गे, हे शिवे, हे भीमनादा, आप सरस्वती, अरुन्धती और अमोघस्वरूपा हैं; सत्पुरुषों की विभूति और कालरात्रि-स्वरूपा हैं — हे जगत्तारिणि, त्राहि दुर्गे!
શરણમસિ સુરાણાં સિદ્ધવિદ્યાધરાણાં મુનિદનુજવરાણાં વ્યાધિભિઃ પીડિતાનામ્। નૃપતિગૃહગતાનાં દસ્યુભિસ્ત્રાસિતાનાં ત્વમસિ શરણમેકા દેવિ દુર્ગે પ્રસીદ॥૯॥
sharanam asi suranam siddha-vidyadharanam muni-danuja-varanam vyadhibhih piditanam | nripati-griha-gatanam dasyubhis trasitanam tvam asi sharanam eka devi durge prasida ||9||
અર્થ:आप देवताओं, सिद्धों, विद्याधरों, मुनियों, श्रेष्ठ मनुष्यों, रोग से पीड़ितों, राजभवन में बन्दी और दस्युओं से त्रस्त जनों की एकमात्र शरण हैं — हे देवि दुर्गे, प्रसन्न होओ!
ઇદં સ્તોત્રં મયા પ્રોક્તમાપદુદ્ધારહેતુકમ્। ત્રિસન્ધ્યમેકસન્ધ્યં વા પઠનાદ્ઘોરસઙ્કટાત્॥
idam stotram maya proktam apad-uddhara-hetukam | tri-sandhyam eka-sandhyam va pathanad ghora-sankatat ||
અર્થ:यह आपत्ति से उद्धार करने वाला स्तोत्र मैंने कहा है। जो इसे तीनों सन्ध्याओं में अथवा एक बार भी पढ़ता है, वह घोर सङ्कट से छूट जाता है — इसमें सन्देह नहीं। जो भक्तियुक्त होकर इसका सम्पूर्ण अथवा एक श्लोक भी सदा पाठ करता है, वह समस्त पाप त्यागकर परम पद को प्राप्त करता है।
મુચ્યતે નાત્ર સન્દેહો ભુવિ સ્વર્ગે રસાતલે। સર્વં વા શ્લોકમેકં વા યઃ પઠેદ્ભક્તિમાન્સદા। સ સર્વં દુષ્કૃતં ત્યક્ત્વા પ્રાપ્નોતિ પરમં પદમ્॥

Protects travellers in forests, on water, in storms and in hostile situations
Removes fear, anxiety and the sense of helplessness in difficult times
Believed to free one from imprisonment, false accusation and the threat of enemies
Grants courage and the assurance of the Divine Mother's protective presence
The phalashruti promises liberation from sins and attainment of the supreme state
Even a single verse recited with devotion is said to ward off ghora-sankata (terrible distress)
श्री दुर्गा आपदुद्धारक स्तोत्रम् જપ વિધિ
The stotra itself prescribes recitation at the three junctures of the day (trisandhyam) or at least once daily. In an emergency it may be chanted then and there with full faith, even a single verse. Sit facing east before an image of Durga if possible, light a lamp, and recite with concentration on the refrain 'Trahi Durge' (protect me, O Durga), feeling oneself wholly surrendered to the Mother. Regular recitation builds an enduring shield of protection.
