After the Goddess had destroyed Mahishasura's vast armies and his generals, Mahishasura himself, repeatedly changing his shape between buffalo, lion, man and elephant, attacked her. The Devi, intoxicated with the battle, drank the divine madhu, hurled her defiant challenge, and finally pinned him underfoot and severed his head as he tried to escape his buffalo form, ending the hundred-year tyranny of the asuras.

ദേവ്യുവാച ഗര്ജ ഗര്ജ ക്ഷണം മൂഢ മധു യാവത്പിബാമ്യഹമ് । മയാ ത്വയി ഹതേഽത്രൈവ ഗര്ജിഷ്യന്ത്യാശു ദേവതാഃ ॥
devyuvāca garja garja kṣaṇaṃ mūḍha madhu yāvatpibāmyaham mayā tvayi hate'traiva garjiṣyantyāśu devatāḥ
അർഥം:देवी बोलीं — 'अरे मूढ़! क्षण भर गरज ले, गरज ले, जब तक मैं यह मधु पी रही हूँ। जब मैं तुझे यहीं मार डालूँगी, तब शीघ्र ही देवता गरजेंगे।' ऋषि बोले — ऐसा कहकर देवी ने उछलकर उस महान् असुर पर चढ़कर, अपने चरण से उसका कण्ठ दबाकर उसे त्रिशूल से मारा। तब देवी के चरण से दबा हुआ वह अपने (भैंसे के) मुख से आधा ही बाहर निकल पाया था कि देवी के पराक्रम से पूरी तरह घिर गया। इस प्रकार आधा ही निकला हुआ, युद्ध करता वह महान् असुर देवी द्वारा महाखड्ग से सिर काटकर गिरा दिया गया।
ഋഷിരുവാച ഏവമുക്ത്വാ സമുത്പത്യ സാരൂഢാ തം മഹാസുരമ് । പാദേനാക്രമ്യ കണ്ഠേ ച ശൂലേനൈനമതാഡയത് ॥
ṛṣiruvāca evamuktvā samutpatya sārūḍhā taṃ mahāsuram pādenākramya kaṇṭhe ca śūlenainamatāḍayat
തതഃ സോഽപി പദാക്രാന്തസ്തയാ നിജമുഖാത്തദാ । അര്ധനിഷ്ക്രാന്ത ഏവാസീദ്ദേവ്യാ വീര്യേണ സംവൃതഃ ॥
tataḥ so'pi padākrāntastayā nijamukhāttadā ardhaniṣkrānta evāsīddevyā vīryeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ
അര്ധനിഷ്ക്രാന്ത ഏവാസൌ യുധ്യമാനോ മഹാസുരഃ । തയാ മഹാസിനാ ദേവ്യാ ശിരശ്ഛിത്ത്വാ നിപാതിതഃ ॥
