✦ Meaning
Granted the divine eye, Arjuna begins to describe the overwhelming universal form (Vishvarupa) of Krishna. In this first verse of his description he beholds within the Lord's body all the gods, every class of being, Brahma seated on the cosmic lotus, Shiva, the sages and the divine serpents. The vision reveals that the entire cosmos and all its deities dwell within the one Supreme Being.
Origin & Story
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11, Verse 15 · Sage Veda Vyasa (Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva) · Ancient (text compiled c. 5th–2nd century BCE)
In the eleventh chapter, Vishvarupa Darshana Yoga, after Krishna grants the divine eye, Arjuna begins to behold and describe the universal form. This verse opens his account, as he sees all the gods, beings, Brahma, Shiva, the sages and divine serpents present within the body of the Lord.
✦ As told in scripture
It is said that within the universal form Arjuna beheld the whole of creation — every world, deity and being — gathered in the single body of the Lord, a vision possible only by divine grace and granting a glimpse of God's truly infinite nature.
