The Gayatri Mantra is the most revered verse of the Vedas, addressed to Savitr (the Sun) as the source of all light and wisdom; its Goddess, Maa Gayatri, is honoured as Vedmata, the mother of the Vedas. This Chalisa praises her twenty-four sacred syllables, her form seated on a swan, and her power as Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali in one, the divine light that awakens the intellect and burns away ignorance.

It is held that the twenty-four syllables of the Gayatri kindle the light of the intellect and burn away the sins of many births; the sages declare that of all the mantras in the world none equals the Gayatri, and that whoever takes her refuge crosses beyond every calamity.

ਅਰਥ:Hrim, Shrim, Klim — O radiance of intellect and light, fierce flame of life! Peace, splendour, awakening and progress, creative and unbroken Power.

ਅਰਥ:Mother of the world, doer of all good, Gayatri, abode of joy; I bow to Savitri, Svadha and Svaha, fulfiller of every desire.
ਭੂਰ੍ਭੁਵਃ ਸ੍ਵਃ ੴ ਯੁਤ ਜਨਨੀ । ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਿਤ ਕਲਿਮਲ ਦਹਨੀ ॥
Bhurbhuvah svah Om yuta janani Gayatri nita kalimala dahani
ਅਰਥ:O Mother joined with Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah and Om; Gayatri, who daily burns away the impurities of the dark age.
ਅਕ੍षਰ ਚੌਬੀਸ ਪਰਮ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ । ਇਨਮੇਂ ਬਸੇਂ ਸ਼ਾਸ੍ਤ੍ਰ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਿ ਗੀਤਾ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Your twenty-four syllables are supremely holy; within them dwell the scriptures, the Vedas and the Gita.
ਸ਼ਾਸ਼੍ਵਤ ਸਤੋਗੁਣੀ ਸਤ ਰੂਪਾ । ਸਤ੍ਯ ਸਨਾਤਨ ਸੁਧਾ ਅਨੂਪਾ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Eternal, of the quality of purity (sattva), your very form is Truth; true, everlasting, peerless nectar.
ਹਂਸਾਰੂਢ ਸ਼੍ਵੇਤਾਂਬਰ ਧਾਰੀ । ਸ੍ਵਰ੍ਣ ਕਾਂਤਿ ਸ਼ੁਚਿ ਗਗਨ-ਬਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
Hamsarudha shvetambara dhari Svarna kamti shuchi gagana-bihari
ਅਰਥ:Mounted upon a swan, clad in white, with the lustre of gold, pure, roaming the open sky.
ਪੁਸ੍ਤਕ ਪੁष੍ਪ ਕਮਂਡਲੁ ਮਾਲਾ । ਸ਼ੁਭ੍ਰ ਵਰ੍ਣ ਤਨੁ ਨਯਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਾ ॥
Pustaka pushpa kamamdalu mala Shubhra varna tanu nayana vishala
ਅਰਥ:Bearing book, flower, water-pot and rosary; of bright hue, with a radiant body and large eyes.
ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਧਰਤ ਪੁਲਕਿਤ ਹਿਤ ਹੋਈ । ਸੁਖ ਉਪਜਤ ਦੁਖ ਦੁਰ੍ਮਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
Dhyana dharata pulakita hita hoi Sukha upajata dukha durmati khoi
ਅਰਥ:Meditating upon you, the heart thrills with joy; happiness wells up, and sorrow and ill-will are lost.
ਕਾਮਧੇਨੁ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਰ ਤਰੁ ਛਾਯਾ । ਨਿਰਾਕਾਰ ਕੀ ਅਦ੍ਭੁਤ ਮਾਯਾ ॥
Kamadhenu tuma sura taru chhaya Nirakara ki adbhuta maya
ਅਰਥ:You are the wish-granting cow (Kamadhenu), the shade of the celestial wish-tree; the wondrous Maya of the Formless One.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਗਹੈ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ । ਤਰੈ ਸਕਲ ਸਂਕਟ ਸੋਂ ਸੋਈ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Whoever takes refuge in you crosses safely beyond every calamity.

ਅਰਥ:You are Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali; your matchless light shines forth.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈਂ । ਜੋ ਸ਼ਾਰਦ ਸ਼ਤ ਮੁਖ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈਂ ॥
Tumhari mahima para na pavaim Jo sharada shata mukha guna gavaim
ਅਰਥ:None can reach the end of your glory, though Sharada with a hundred mouths were to sing your virtues.
ਚਾਰ ਵੇਦ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ । ਤੁਮ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾਣੀ ਗੌਰੀ ਸੀਤਾ ॥

ਮਹਾਮਂਤ੍ਰ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀਂ । ਕੋਉ ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਮ ਨਾਹੀਂ ॥
Mahamamtra jitane jaga mahim Kou gayatri sama nahim
ਅਰਥ:Of all the great mantras in the world, none is the equal of the Gayatri.
ਸੁਮਿਰਤ ਹਿਯ ਮੇਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੈ । ਆਲਸ ਪਾਪ ਅਵਿਦ੍ਯਾ ਨਾਸੈ ॥
Sumirata hiya mem jnana prakasai Alasa papa avidya nasai
ਅਰਥ:Remembering you, knowledge dawns within the heart; sloth, sin and ignorance are destroyed.
ਸृष੍ਟਿ ਬੀਜ ਜਗ ਜਨਨਿ ਭਵਾਨੀ । ਕਾਲਰਾਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਰਦਾ ਕਲ੍ਯਾਣੀ ॥
Srishti bija jaga janani bhavani Kalaratri varada kalyani
ਅਰਥ:Seed of creation, Mother of the world, Bhavani; Kalaratri, boon-giver, the auspicious one.
ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾ ਵਿष੍ਣੁ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਸੁਰ ਜੇਤੇ । ਤੁਮ ਸੋਂ ਪਾਵੇਂ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਤੇਤੇ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and all the gods, from you they receive their divine power.
ਤੁਮ ਭਕ੍ਤਨ ਕੀ ਭਕ੍ਤ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੇ । ਜਨਨਿਹਿਂ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੇ ॥
Tuma bhaktana ki bhakta tumhare Jananihim putra prana te pyare
ਅਰਥ:You belong to your devotees and they to you, dear to you as a son to his mother, dearer than life itself.
ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਪਰਮ੍ਪਾਰ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ । ਜਯ ਜਯ ਜਯ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਦਾ ਭਯਹਾਰੀ ॥
Mahima aparampara tumhari Jaya jaya jaya tripada bhayahari
ਅਰਥ:Boundless is your glory; victory, victory, victory to you, three-versed Tripada, remover of all fear.
ਪੂਰਿਤ ਸਕਲ ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਵਿਜ੍ਞਾਨਾ । ਤੁਮ ਸਮ ਅਧਿਕ ਨ ਜਗਮੇਂ ਆਨਾ ॥
Purita sakala jnana vijnana Tuma sama adhika na jagamem ana
ਅਰਥ:Full of all knowledge and wisdom; none greater than you has ever come into the world.
ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਸ਼ੇषਾ । ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਪਾਯ ਕਛੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕ੍ਲੇਸਾ ॥
Tumahim jani kachhu rahai na shesha Tumahim paya kachhu rahai na klesa
ਅਰਥ:Knowing you, nothing remains unknown; attaining you, no affliction remains.
ਜਾਨਤ ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਵ੍ਹੈ ਜਾਈ । ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸਿ ਕੁਧਾਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Knowing you, one becomes you, as base metal is turned to beauty at the touch of the philosopher's stone.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੀ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਤਿ ਦਿਪੈ ਸਬ ਠਾਈ । ਮਾਤਾ ਤੁਮ ਸਬ ਠੌਰ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Your power shines in every place; O Mother, you pervade all places.
ਗ੍ਰਹ ਨਕ੍षਤ੍ਰ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾਂਡ ਘਨੇਰੇ । ਸਬ ਗਤਿਵਾਨ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰੇ ॥

ਅਰਥ:The countless planets, stars and universes all move, impelled by you.
ਸਕਲ ਸृष੍ਟਿ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ । ਪਾਲਕ ਪੋषਕ ਨਾਸ਼ਕ ਤ੍ਰਾਤਾ ॥
Sakala srishti ki prana vidhata Palaka poshaka nashaka trata
ਅਰਥ:Life-giver and ordainer of all creation; protector, nourisher, destroyer and saviour.
ਮਾਤੇਸ਼੍ਵਰੀ ਦਯਾ ਵ੍ਰਤ ਧਾਰੀ । ਤੁਮ ਸਨ ਤਰੇ ਪਾਤਕੀ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
Mateshvari daya vrata dhari Tuma sana tare pataki bhari
ਅਰਥ:Mother-goddess, holding the vow of compassion; by you even the gravest sinners are saved.
ਜਾਪਰ ਕृਪਾ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਹੋਈ । ਤਾਪਰ ਕृਪਾ ਕਰੇਂ ਸਬ ਕੋਈ ॥
Japara kripa tumhari hoi Tapara kripa karem saba koi
ਅਰਥ:On whomever your grace falls, upon him every other being shows grace.
ਮਂਦ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਤੇ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਲ ਪਾਵੇਂ । ਰੋਗੀ ਰੋਗ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਂ ॥
Mamda buddhi te budhi bala pavem Rogi roga rahita ho javem
ਅਰਥ:The dull-witted gain the strength of intellect; the sick become free of their disease.
ਦਰਿਦ੍ਰ ਮਿਟੈ ਕਟੈ ਸਬ ਪੀਰਾ । ਨਾਸ਼ੈ ਦੁਖ ਹਰੈ ਭਵ ਭੀਰਾ ॥
Daridra mitai katai saba pira Nashai dukha harai bhava bhira
ਅਰਥ:Poverty is erased and all pain cut away; sorrow is destroyed and the fear of worldly existence removed.
ਗृਹ ਕ੍ਲੇਸ਼ ਚਿਤ ਚਿਂਤਾ ਭਾਰੀ । ਨਾਸੈ ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਯ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
Griha klesha chita chimta bhari Nasai gayatri bhaya hari
ਅਰਥ:Household strife and the heavy anxiety of the mind, Gayatri, remover of fear, destroys them all.
ਸਂਤਤਿ ਹੀਨ ਸੁਸਂਤਤਿ ਪਾਵੇਂ । ਸੁਖ ਸਂਪਤਿ ਯੁਤ ਮੋਦ ਮਨਾਵੇਂ ॥
Samtati hina susamtati pavem Sukha sampati yuta moda manavem
ਅਰਥ:The childless gain good offspring, and rejoice, blessed with happiness and wealth.
ਭੂਤ ਪਿਸ਼ਾਚ ਸਬੈ ਭਯ ਖਾਵੇਂ । ਯਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਤ ਨਿਕਟ ਨਹਿਂ ਆਵੇਂ ॥
Bhuta pishacha sabai bhaya khavem Yama ke duta nikata nahim avem
ਅਰਥ:Ghosts and goblins are all consumed by fear; the messengers of Yama come not near.
ਜੋ ਸਧਵਾ ਸੁਮਿਰੇਂ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਈ । ਅਛਤ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
Jo sadhava sumirem chita lai Achhata suhaga sada sukhadai
ਅਰਥ:The married woman who remembers you with a focused heart keeps her wifehood unbroken, ever a source of joy.
ਘਰ ਵਰ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਦ ਲਹੈਂ ਕੁਮਾਰੀ । ਵਿਧਵਾ ਰਹੇਂ ਸਤ੍ਯ ਵ੍ਰਤ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
Ghara vara sukha prada lahaim kumari Vidhava rahem satya vrata dhari
ਅਰਥ:The maiden gains a home and a good, joy-giving husband; the widow abides, holding fast to the vow of truth.
ਜਯਤਿ ਜਯਤਿ ਜਗਦਂਬ ਭਵਾਨੀ । ਤੁਮ ਸਮ ਓਰ ਦਯਾਲੁ ਨ ਦਾਨੀ ॥
Jayati jayati jagadamba bhavani Tuma sama ora dayalu na dani
ਅਰਥ:Victory, victory, O Jagadamba Bhavani; there is none so merciful or so giving as you.
ਜੋ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੋ ਦੀਕ੍षਾ ਪਾਵੇ । ਸੋ ਸਾਧਨ ਕੋ ਸਫਲ ਬਨਾਵੇ ॥
Jo sataguru so diksha pave So sadhana ko saphala banave
ਅਰਥ:Whoever receives initiation from a true guru makes his spiritual practice bear fruit.
ਸੁਮਿਰਨ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਰੂਚਿ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ । ਲਹੈ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਗृਹੀ ਵਿਰਾਗੀ ॥
Sumirana kare suruchi badabhagi Lahai manoratha grihi viragi
ਅਰਥ:The fortunate one who remembers you with pure love attains his heart's desire, be he householder or renunciate.
ਅष੍ਟ ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਨਵਨਿਧਿ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਾ । ਸਬ ਸਮਰ੍ਥ ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
Ashta siddhi navanidhi ki data Saba samartha gayatri mata
ਅਰਥ:Giver of the eight siddhis and the nine treasures; all-capable is Mother Gayatri.
ऋषਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਯਤੀ ਤਪਸ੍ਵੀ ਯੋਗੀ । ਆਰਤ ਅਰ੍ਥੀ ਚਿਂਤਿਤ ਭੋਗੀ ॥
Rishi muni yati tapasvi yogi Arata arthi chimtita bhogi
ਅਰਥ:Sages, seers, ascetics, the penitent and yogis; the afflicted, the supplicant, the worried and the pleasure-seeker —
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਆਵੇਂ । ਸੋ ਸੋ ਮਨ ਵਾਂਛਿਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੇਂ ॥
Jo jo sharana tumhari avem So so mana vamchhita phala pavem
ਅਰਥ:Whoever comes to your refuge, each and every one gains the fruit his heart desires.
ਬਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਵਿਦ੍ਯਾ ਸ਼ੀਲ ਸ੍ਵਭਾਉ । ਧਨ ਵੈਭਵ ਯਸ਼ ਤੇਜ ਉਛਾਉ ॥
Bala budhi vidya shila svabhau Dhana vaibhava yasha teja uchhau
ਅਰਥ:Strength, intellect, learning, good character and disposition; wealth, splendour, fame, radiance and high spirits —
ਸਕਲ ਬਢੇਂ ਉਪਜੇਂ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਨਾ । ਜੇ ਯਹ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈ ਧਰਿ ਧ੍ਯਾਨਾ ॥
Sakala badhem upajem sukha nana Je yaha patha karai dhari dhyana
ਅਰਥ:All these increase, and manifold joys arise, for whoever recites this with meditative attention.
ਯਹ ਚਾਲੀਸਾ ਭਕ੍ਤਿ ਯੁਤ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ । ਤਾਪਰ ਕृਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਨ੍ਨਤਾ ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੀ ਹੋਯ ॥
Yaha chalisa bhakti yuta patha karai jo koi Tapara kripa prasannata gayatri ki hoya
ਅਰਥ:Whoever recites this Chalisa with devotion, upon him fall the grace and the good pleasure of Gayatri.

Gayatri Chalisa ਪਾਠ ਵਿਧੀ
After bathing, sit facing east at dawn, light a lamp, and if possible keep an image of Maa Gayatri before you. Recite the Chalisa with devotion and, ideally, follow it with japa of the Gayatri Mantra on a rudraksha or tulsi mala. It is best done at the sandhya times and as a steady daily practice.
