Ganesha Purana / Mudgala Purana tradition (Mayureshwar Morgaon Mahatmya) · Traditional; spoken by Lord Brahma (Brahma uvacha) · Puranic

Ganesha incarnated as Mayureshwara, riding a peacock, to destroy the demon Sindhu, and made Morgaon his abode — the kshetra that became the foremost of the eight Ashtavinayaka shrines. In this hymn the creator Brahma himself praises that Mayuresha, sweeping from His playful cosmic sports to His nature as the supreme consciousness-bliss and Lord of countless universes. Pleased, Mayuresha pronounces the fruits of the stotra, declaring it a destroyer of sin and a giver of freedom, health and liberation.

Mayuresha himself promises in the closing verses that this hymn frees even those locked in prison within seven days of devoted recitation and cures afflictions of mind and body — a phala echoed in the tradition of Morgaon, where countless pilgrims credit Moreshwar with release from bondage and relief from suffering.

Mayuresha (also Mayureshwara) is Ganesha in the form that rides a peacock (mayura), the deity who slew the demon Sindhu. He is the presiding deity of Morgaon (Moreshwar) in Maharashtra, the first and most important of the eight Ashtavinayaka shrines.
It is a hymn of Lord Brahma (Brahma uvacha) praising Ganesha as Mayuresha, preserved in the Ganesha/Mudgala Puranic tradition associated with the Ashtavinayaka and the Morgaon kshetra.
Mayuresha himself declares in the closing verses that the hymn destroys all sins, frees those who are imprisoned within seven days, removes mental and physical afflictions (adhi-vyadhi), and grants both worldly enjoyment and liberation (bhukti-mukti).
Morgaon, the shrine of Mayureshwar, is regarded as the starting and finishing point of the Ashtavinayaka pilgrimage of eight self-manifested Ganesha temples in Maharashtra, which is why this stotra is dear to Ashtavinayaka devotees.
