The Ganesh Chalisa draws from multiple Puranic sources for the birth story of Lord Ganesha. The version narrated in this chalisa describes how Parvati performed severe penance for a son, and a divine Brahmin (Ganesha himself in disguise) appeared, blessed her, and then manifested as a baby on a cradle. Other versions from the Shiva Purana describe Parvati creating Ganesha from sandalwood paste. Regardless of the version, all agree that Ganesha is the firstborn son of Shiva and Parvati and holds the supreme position of being worshipped before all other deities.

One of the most famous miracles associated with Ganesha occurred on September 21, 1995, when millions of Ganesha statues across India and around the world were reported to be drinking milk offered by devotees. The phenomenon, known as the 'Milk Miracle,' began at a temple in New Delhi and spread worldwide within hours. Scientists and skeptics investigated but could not fully explain the phenomenon. For devotees, it was Ganesha demonstrating his living presence — the same presence invoked through prayers like the Ganesh Chalisa. The event remains one of the most widely witnessed and documented religious phenomena in modern history.

ਜੈ ਗਜਬਦਨ ਸਦਨ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ । ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵ ਵਿਨਾਯਕਾ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
Jai gajabadana sadana sukhadata vishva vinayaka buddhi vidhata
ਅਰਥ:Hail, elephant-faced one, abode and giver of joy; lord of the universe (Vinayaka) and bestower of intellect.
ਵਕ੍ਰ ਤੁਣ੍ਡ ਸ਼ੁਚੀ ਸ਼ੁਣ੍ਡ ਸੁਹਾਵਨਾ । ਤਿਲਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਣ੍ਡ ਭਾਲ ਮਨ ਭਾਵਨ ॥
Vakra tunda shuchi shunda suhavana tilaka tripunda bhala mana bhavana
ਅਰਥ:Of curved trunk and bright, lovely tusk; the three-lined tilak on your brow delights the mind.
ਰਾਜਤ ਮਣਿ ਮੁਕ੍ਤਨ ਉਰ ਮਾਲਾ । ਸ੍ਵਰ੍ਣ ਮੁਕੁਟ ਸ਼ਿਰ ਨਯਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਾ ॥
Rajata mani muktana ura mala svarna mukuta shira nayana vishala
ਅਰਥ:A garland of gems and pearls shines upon your chest; a golden crown upon your head, and large, wide eyes.
ਪੁਸ੍ਤਕ ਪਾਣਿ ਕੁਠਾਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ੂਲਂ । ਮੋਦਕ ਭੋਗ ਸੁਗਨ੍ਧਿਤ ਫੂਲਂ ॥
Pustaka pani kuthara trishulam modaka bhoga sugandhita phulam
ਅਰਥ:A book in your hand, the axe and the trident; offerings of modak sweets and fragrant flowers.
ਸੁਨ੍ਦਰ ਪੀਤਾਮ੍ਬਰ ਤਨ ਸਾਜਿਤ । ਚਰਣ ਪਾਦੁਕਾ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਰਾਜਿਤ ॥
Sundara pitambara tana sajita charana paduka muni mana rajita
ਅਰਥ:Adorned in beautiful yellow silk; your sandalled feet delight the minds of sages.
ਧਨਿ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਸੁਵਨ षਡਾਨਨ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ । ਗੌਰੀ ਲਾਲਨ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵ-ਵਿਖ੍ਯਾਤਾ ॥
Dhani shiva suvana shadanana bhrata gauri lalana vishva-vikhyata
ਅਰਥ:Blessed brother of the six-faced Kartikeya and son of Shiva; darling of Gauri, renowned throughout the world.
ऋਦ੍ਧਿ-ਸਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਤਵ ਚਂਵਰ ਸੁਧਾਰੇ । ਮੁषਕ ਵਾਹਨ ਸੋਹਤ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੇ ॥
Riddhi-siddhi tava chamvara sudhare mushaka vahana sohata dvare
ਅਰਥ:Riddhi and Siddhi wave the royal fan over you; your mouse-mount graces your doorway.
ਕਹੌ ਜਨ੍ਮ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਕਥਾ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ । ਅਤਿ ਸ਼ੁਚੀ ਪਾਵਨ ਮਂਗਲਕਾਰੀ ॥
Kahau janma shubha katha tumhari ati shuchi pavana mamgalakari
ਅਰਥ:Now I tell the auspicious story of your birth — most pure, holy and bestowing every blessing.
ਏਕ ਸਮਯ ਗਿਰਿਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰੀ । ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹੇਤੁ ਤਪ ਕੀਨ੍ਹਾ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
Eka samaya giriraja kumari putra hetu tapa kinha bhari
ਅਰਥ:Once the daughter of the mountain-king (Parvati) performed great penance for the sake of a son.
ਭਯੋ ਯਜ੍ਞ ਜਬ ਪੂਰ੍ਣ ਅਨੂਪਾ । ਤਬ ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਤੁਮ ਧਰੀ ਦ੍ਵਿਜ ਰੂਪਾ ॥
Bhayo yajna jaba purna anupa taba pahumchyo tuma dhari dvija rupa
ਅਰਥ:When that matchless sacrifice was complete, you arrived bearing the form of a brahmin.
ਅਤਿਥਿ ਜਾਨੀ ਕੇ ਗੌਰੀ ਸੁਖਾਰੀ । ਬਹੁਵਿਧਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ॥
Atithi jani ke gauri sukhari bahuvidhi seva kari tumhari
ਅਰਥ:Recognizing the guest, Gauri rejoiced and served you in every way.
ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਨ੍ਨ ਹਵੈ ਤੁਮ ਵਰ ਦੀਨ੍ਹਾ । ਮਾਤੁ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹਿਤ ਜੋ ਤਪ ਕੀਨ੍ਹਾ ॥
Ati prasanna havai tuma vara dinha matu putra hita jo tapa kinha
ਅਰਥ:Greatly pleased, you granted her a boon for the penance she had done to gain a son:
ਮਿਲਹਿ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਤੁਹਿ, ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਾ । ਬਿਨਾ ਗਰ੍ਭ ਧਾਰਣ ਯਹਿ ਕਾਲਾ ॥
Milahi putra tuhi, buddhi vishala bina garbha dharana yahi kala
ਅਰਥ:“You shall obtain a son of vast intellect — and at this very moment, without bearing a womb.
ਗਣਨਾਯਕ ਗੁਣ ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ । ਪੂਜਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਰੂਪ ਭਗਵਾਨਾ ॥
Gananayaka guna jnana nidhana pujita prathama rupa bhagavana
ਅਰਥ:He shall be the lord of the ganas, a treasure-house of virtue and wisdom, worshipped first of all the gods.”
ਅਸ ਕਹੀ ਅਨ੍ਤਰ੍ਧਾਨ ਰੂਪ ਹਵੈ । ਪਾਲਨਾ ਪਰ ਬਾਲਕ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪ ਹਵੈ ॥
Asa kahi antardhana rupa havai palana para balaka svarupa havai
ਅਰਥ:So saying, the brahmin vanished, and took the form of a child upon the cradle.
ਬਨਿ ਸ਼ਿਸ਼ੁ ਰੁਦਨ ਜਬਹਿਂ ਤੁਮ ਠਾਨਾ । ਲਖਿ ਮੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਨਹਿਂ ਗੌਰੀ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
Bani shishu rudana jabahim tuma thana lakhi mukha sukha nahim gauri samana
ਅਰਥ:When you as the infant began to cry, no joy equalled Gauri's as she beheld your face.
ਸਕਲ ਮਗਨ, ਸੁਖਮਂਗਲ ਗਾਵਹਿਂ । ਨਾਭ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਨ, ਸੁਮਨ ਵਰ੍षਾਵਹਿਂ ॥
Sakala magana, sukhamamgala gavahim nabha te surana, sumana varshavahim
ਅਰਥ:All were absorbed in joy and sang of bliss and blessing; from the sky the gods rained down flowers.
ਸ਼ਮ੍ਭੁ, ਉਮਾ, ਬਹੁਦਾਨ ਲੁਟਾਵਹਿਂ । ਸੁਰ ਮੁਨਿਜਨ, ਸੁਤ ਦੇਖਨ ਆਵਹਿਂ ॥
Shambhu, uma, bahudana lutavahim sura munijana, suta dekhana avahim
ਅਰਥ:Shambhu (Shiva) and Uma gave away great gifts in charity; gods and sages came to behold the son.
ਲਖਿ ਅਤਿ ਆਨਨ੍ਦ ਮਂਗਲ ਸਾਜਾ । ਦੇਖਨ ਭੀ ਆਯੇ ਸ਼ਨਿ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
Lakhi ati ananda mamgala saja dekhana bhi aye shani raja
ਅਰਥ:Seeing the great festival of joy and celebration, Shani (Saturn) the king also came to behold him.
ਨਿਜ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਗੁਨਿ ਸ਼ਨਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀਂ । ਬਾਲਕ, ਦੇਖਨ ਚਾਹਤ ਨਾਹੀਂ ॥
Nija avaguna guni shani mana mahim balaka, dekhana chahata nahim
ਅਰਥ:Mindful of his own flaw within his heart, Shani did not wish to look upon the child.
ਗਿਰਿਜਾ ਕਛੁ ਮਨ ਭੇਦ ਬਢਾਯੋ । ਉਤ੍ਸਵ ਮੋਰ, ਨ ਸ਼ਨਿ ਤੁਹੀ ਭਾਯੋ ॥
Girija kachhu mana bheda badhayo utsava mora, na shani tuhi bhayo
ਅਰਥ:Girija took some offence in her mind: “At my festival has even Shani not been pleased to look upon my son?”
ਕਹਤ ਲਗੇ ਸ਼ਨਿ, ਮਨ ਸਕੁਚਾਈ । ਕਾ ਕਰਿਹੌ, ਸ਼ਿਸ਼ੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥
Kahata lage shani, mana sakuchai ka karihau, shishu mohi dikhai
ਅਰਥ:Shani spoke, hesitating in his heart: “What shall happen if I look upon the child?”
ਨਹਿਂ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਾਸ, ਉਮਾ ਉਰ ਭਯਊ । ਸ਼ਨਿ ਸੋਂ ਬਾਲਕ ਦੇਖਨ ਕਹਯਊ ॥
Nahim vishvasa, uma ura bhayau shani som balaka dekhana kahayau
ਅਰਥ:No belief arose in Uma's heart; she bade Shani look upon the boy.
ਪਦਤਹਿਂ ਸ਼ਨਿ ਦृਗ ਕੋਣ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਾ । ਬਾਲਕ ਸਿਰ ਉੜਿ ਗਯੋ ਅਕਾਸ਼ਾ ॥
Padatahim shani driga kona prakasha balaka sira uड़i gayo akasha
ਅਰਥ:The instant Shani's sidelong eye cast its ray, the child's head flew off into the sky.
ਗਿਰਿਜਾ ਗਿਰੀ ਵਿਕਲ ਹਵੈ ਧਰਣੀ । ਸੋ ਦੁਃਖ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਗਯੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਣੀ ॥
Girija giri vikala havai dharani so duhkha dasha gayo nahim varani
ਅਰਥ:Girija fell to the ground, distraught; that state of sorrow cannot be described.
ਹਾਹਾਕਾਰ ਮਚ੍ਯੌ ਕੈਲਾਸ਼ਾ । ਸ਼ਨਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੋਂ ਲਖਿ ਸੁਤ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ਼ਾ ॥
Hahakara machyau kailasha shani kinhom lakhi suta ko nasha
ਅਰਥ:An uproar arose upon Kailasa — it was seen that Shani had caused the son's destruction.
ਤੁਰਤ ਗਰੁੜ ਚढ़ਿ ਵਿष੍ਣੁ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ । ਕਾਟੀ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਸੋ ਗਜ ਸਿਰ ਲਾਯੇ ॥
Turata garuड़ chaढ़i vishnu sidhayo kati chakra so gaja sira laye
ਅਰਥ:At once Vishnu set off mounted on Garuda; he severed a head with his discus and brought an elephant's head.
ਬਾਲਕ ਕੇ ਧਡ़ ਊਪਰ ਧਾਰਯੋ । ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਮਨ੍ਤ੍ਰ ਪढ़ਿ ਸ਼ਂਕਰ ਡਾਰਯੋ ॥
Balaka ke dhada़ upara dharayo prana mantra paढ़i shamkara darayo
ਅਰਥ:He placed it upon the child's torso, and Shankara, reciting the mantra of life, revived him.
ਨਾਮ ਗਣੇਸ਼ ਸ਼ਮ੍ਭੁ ਤਬ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੇ । ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਪੂਜ੍ਯ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਨਿਧਿ, ਵਰ ਦੀਨ੍ਹੇ ॥
Nama ganesha shambhu taba kinhe prathama pujya buddhi nidhi, vara dinhe
ਅਰਥ:Shambhu then gave him the name Ganesha, and the boon of being worshipped first, a treasure of wisdom.
ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਪਰੀਕ੍षਾ ਜਬ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੀਨ੍ਹਾ । ਪृਥ੍ਵੀ ਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਦਕ੍षਿਣਾ ਲੀਨ੍ਹਾ ॥
Buddhi pariksha jaba shiva kinha prithvi kara pradakshina linha
ਅਰਥ:When Shiva tested their intelligence, the brothers were to circle the earth.
ਚਲੇ षਡਾਨਨ, ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ । ਰਚੇ ਬੈਠ ਤੁਮ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥
Chale shadanana, bharami bhulai rache baitha tuma buddhi upai
ਅਰਥ:The six-faced Kartikeya went wandering, lost in confusion; but you devised a clever plan.
ਚਰਣ ਮਾਤੁ-ਪਿਤੁ ਕੇ ਧਰ ਲੀਨ੍ਹੇਂ । ਤਿਨਕੇ ਸਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਦਕ੍षਿਣ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੇਂ ॥
Charana matu-pitu ke dhara linhem tinake sata pradakshina kinhem
ਅਰਥ:You took hold of the feet of your mother and father, and made seven circuits around them.
ਧਨਿ ਗਣੇਸ਼ ਕਹੀ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਹਿਯੇ ਹਰषੇ । ਨਭ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਨ ਸੁਮਨ ਬਹੁ ਬਰਸੇ ॥
Dhani ganesha kahi shiva hiye harashe nabha te surana sumana bahu barase
ਅਰਥ:“Blessed is Ganesha!” said Shiva, his heart delighted; from the sky the gods rained many flowers.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਬੜਾਈ । ਸ਼ੇष ਸਹਸਮੁਖ ਸਕੇ ਨ ਗਾਈ ॥
Tumhari mahima buddhi baड़ai shesha sahasamukha sake na gai
ਅਰਥ:Your glory and the greatness of your wisdom — even the thousand-mouthed Shesha could not sing them.
ਮੈਂ ਮਤਿਹੀਨ ਮਲੀਨ ਦੁਖਾਰੀ । ਕਰਹੂਂ ਕੌਨ ਵਿਧਿ ਵਿਨਯ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ॥
Maim matihina malina dukhari karahum kauna vidhi vinaya tumhari
ਅਰਥ:I am dull-witted, impure and sorrowful — by what means can I offer you fitting prayer?
ਭਜਤ ਰਾਮਸੁਨ੍ਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁਦਾਸਾ । ਜਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਗ, ਕਕਰਾ, ਦੁਰ੍ਵਾਸਾ ॥
Bhajata ramasundara prabhudasa jaga prayaga, kakara, durvasa
ਅਰਥ:Ramsundar Prabhudas, of Prayag (Kakra, of the line of Durvasa), worships you.
ਅਬ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਯਾ ਦੀਨਾ ਪਰ ਕੀਜੈ । ਅਪਨੀ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਤਿ ਭਕ੍ਤਿ ਕੁਛ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
Aba prabhu daya dina para kijai apani shakti bhakti kuchha dijai
ਅਰਥ:Now, O Lord, show mercy upon the lowly; grant me a little of your power and devotion.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗਣੇਸ਼ ਯਹ ਚਾਲੀਸਾ, ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈ ਕਰ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ । ਨਿਤ ਨਵ ਮਂਗਲ ਗृਹ ਬਸੈ, ਲਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਸਨ੍ਮਾਨ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Whoever recites this Ganesh Chalisa with a focused mind and meditation — ever-new auspiciousness dwells in his home, and he gains honour in the world.

It is traditional to begin any new project, journey, or important task with this chalisa. Reciting it on Wednesdays (Ganesha's day) and during Ganesh Chaturthi is especially auspicious.
