✦ Meaning
Within the revelation of the cosmic form, Krishna urges Arjuna to arise and do his duty as a warrior. He declares that the opposing warriors have, in truth, already been slain by the divine will; Arjuna is called to be merely an instrument (nimitta-matra) of that will. This profound verse teaches the secret of acting as God's instrument — performing one's duty wholeheartedly while recognising the Lord as the true doer.
Origin & Story
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11, Verse 33 · Sage Veda Vyasa (Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva) · Ancient (text compiled c. 5th–2nd century BCE)
In the eleventh chapter, Vishvarupa Darshana Yoga, having shown that the cosmic form is Time itself devouring all the warriors, Krishna calls Arjuna to arise and fight. He declares that the foes are already slain by the divine will and that Arjuna should be merely its instrument — a teaching at the heart of selfless, surrendered action.
✦ As told in scripture
This verse is cherished as the secret of the karma yogi: those who act as instruments of the Divine, the tradition teaches, accomplish great deeds effortlessly and remain untouched by the bondage of action, for the Lord Himself works through them.
