The Saraswati Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to the goddess of learning, music and speech. It celebrates how, whenever sinful thinking clouds the world, the Mother descends to restore the light of dharma, and how by her grace alone the murderer Valmiki became the Adi Kavi and poets like Kalidasa, Tulsidas and Surdas attained their genius — a promise of wisdom to every devotee who seeks her.

The Chalisa recounts Saraswati's power not only over learning but over every danger — the angry king, the beasts of the forest, the ship breaking in the storm, the bonds of the prisoner — declaring that whoever chants her name finds all turned to auspiciousness. Above all it remembers her supreme gift: she made a forest bandit into Valmiki, the first poet, proof that her grace can transform anyone.

Purna jagata mem vyapta tava, mahima amita anamtu Ramasagara ke papa ko, matu tuhi aba hantu
অর্থ:Your glory pervades the whole world, boundless and infinite; O Mother, now destroy the sins of (the poet) Ramsagar.
জয শ্রী সকল বুদ্ধি বলরাসী। জয সর্বজ্ঞ অমর অবিনাসী॥
Jaya shri sakala buddhi balarasi Jaya sarvajna amara avinasi
অর্থ:Victory, O glorious one, the store of all intellect and strength; victory, O all-knowing, immortal and imperishable.
জয জয জয বীণাকর ধারী। করতী সদা সুহংস সবারী॥
Jaya jaya jaya vinakara dhari Karati sada suhamsa savari
অর্থ:Victory, victory, victory, O bearer of the veena; ever riding upon the graceful swan.
রূপ চতুর্ভুজধারী মাতা। সকল বিশ্ব অন্দর বিখ্যাতা॥
Rupa chaturbhujadhari mata Sakala vishva andara vikhyata
অর্থ:O four-armed Mother, renowned throughout the entire world.
জগ মেং পাপ বুদ্ধি জব হোতী। জবহি ধর্ম কী ফীকী জ্যোতী॥
Jaga mem papa buddhi jaba hoti Jabahi dharma ki phiki jyoti
অর্থ:When sinful thinking arises in the world, and the light of dharma grows dim —
তবহি মাতু লে নিজ অবতারা। পাপ হীন করতী মহি তারা॥
Tabahi matu le nija avatara Papa hina karati mahi tara
অর্থ:— then the Mother takes her own incarnation, and freeing it of sin, delivers the earth.
বাল্মীকি জী থে হত্যারা। তব প্রসাদ জানৈ সংসারা॥
Balmiki ji the hatyara Tava prasada janai samsara
অর্থ:Valmiki was a murderer; by your grace the world now knows him —
রামাযণ জো রচে বনাঈ। আদি কবী কী পদবী পাঈ॥
Ramayana jo rache banai Adi kavi ki padavi pai
অর্থ:— for he composed the Ramayana and attained the rank of the first poet (Adi Kavi).
কালিদাস জো ভযে বিখ্যাতা। তেরী কৃপা দৃষ্টি সে মাতা॥
Kalidasa jo bhaye vikhyata Teri kripa drishti se mata
অর্থ:Kalidasa became renowned, O Mother, through your gracious glance.
তুলসী সূর আদি বিদ্ধানা। ভযে ঔর জো জ্ঞানী নানা॥
Tulasi sura adi viddhana Bhaye aura jo jnani nana
অর্থ:Tulsidas, Surdas and other scholars, and many another wise one, came to be —
তিন্হহিং ন ঔর রহেউ অবলম্বা। কেবল কৃপা আপকী অম্বা॥
Tinhahim na aura raheu avalamba Kevala kripa apaki amba
অর্থ:— they had no other support, O Mother Amba, but only your grace.
করহু কৃপা সোই মাতু ভবানী। দুখিত দীন নিজ দাসহি জানী॥
Karahu kripa soi matu bhavani Dukhita dina nija dasahi jani
অর্থ:Show such grace, O Mother Bhavani, knowing your servant to be sorrowful and lowly.
পুত্র করৈ অপরাধ বহূতা। তেহি ন ধরই চিত সুন্দর মাতা॥
Putra karai aparadha bahuta Tehi na dharai chita sundara mata
অর্থ:Though the child commits many a fault, the gracious Mother does not take it to heart.
রাখু লাজ জননী অব মেরী। বিনয করূং বহু ভাংতি ঘনেরী॥
Rakhu laja janani aba meri Vinaya karum bahu bhamti ghaneri
অর্থ:Preserve my honour now, O Mother; in many ways I offer abundant prayer.
মৈং অনাথ তেরী অবলংবা। কৃপা করউ জয জয জগদংবা॥
Maim anatha teri avalamba Kripa karau jaya jaya jagadamba
অর্থ:I am an orphan, you are my support; show grace — victory, victory, O Jagadamba.
মধু কৈটভ জো অতি বলবানা। বাহুযুদ্ধ বিষ্ণূ তে ঠানা॥
Madhu kaitabha jo ati balavana Bahuyuddha vishnu te thana
অর্থ:Madhu and Kaitabha, exceedingly mighty, engaged Vishnu in hand-to-hand combat.
সমর হজার পাংচ মেং ঘোরা। ফির ভী মুখ উনসে নহিং মোরা॥
Samara hajara pamcha mem ghora Phira bhi mukha unase nahim mora
অর্থ:For five thousand years the dreadful battle raged, yet he turned not his face from them.
মাতু সহায ভঈ তেহি কালা। বুদ্ধি বিপরীত করী খলহালা॥
Matu sahaya bhai tehi kala Buddhi viparita kari khalahala
অর্থ:The Mother became his help at that hour, deranging the wits of the wicked pair.
তেহি তে মৃত্যু ভঈ খল কেরী। পুরবহু মাতু মনোরথ মেরী॥
Tehi te mrityu bhai khala keri Puravahu matu manoratha meri
অর্থ:By that their death came about; fulfil my heart's desire, O Mother.
চংড মুণ্ড জো থে বিখ্যাতা। ছণ মহুং সংহারেউ তেহি মাতা॥
Chamda munda jo the vikhyata Chhana mahum samhareu tehi mata
অর্থ:Chanda and Munda, who were renowned, the Mother destroyed in an instant.
রক্তবীজ সে সমরথ পাপী। সুর-মুনি হৃদয ধরা সব কাংপী॥
Raktabija se samaratha papi Sura-muni hridaya dhara saba kampi
অর্থ:Raktabija, the mighty sinner, at whom the hearts of gods and sages all trembled —
কাটেউ সির জিম কদলী খম্বা। বার বার বিনবউং জগদংবা॥
Kateu sira jima kadali khamba Bara bara binavaum jagadamba
অর্থ:— you struck off his head as one fells a plantain trunk; again and again I pray, O Jagadamba.
জগ প্রসিদ্ধ জো শুংভ নিশুংভা। ছিন মেং বধে তাহি তূ অম্বা॥
Jaga prasiddha jo shumbha nishumbha Chhina mem badhe tahi tu amba
অর্থ:The world-famed Shumbha and Nishumbha — in a moment you slew them, O Amba.
ভরত-মাতু বুধি ফেরেউ জাঈ। রামচংদ্র বনবাস করাঈ॥
Bharata-matu budhi phereu jai Ramachamdra banavasa karai
অর্থ:You turned the mind of Bharata's mother (Kaikeyi), bringing about Ramachandra's exile to the forest.
এহি বিধি রাবন বধ তুম কীন্হা। সুর নর মুনি সব কহুং সুখ দীন্হা॥
Ehi vidhi ravana vadha tuma kinha Sura nara muni saba kahum sukha dinha
অর্থ:In this way you brought about Ravana's slaying, giving joy to gods, men and sages alike.
কো সমরথ তব যশ গুন গানা। নিগম অনাদি অনংত বখানা॥
Ko samaratha tava yasha guna gana Nigama anadi anamta bakhana
অর্থ:Who is able to sing your glory and virtues? The Vedas proclaim you beginningless and endless.
বিষ্ণু রূদ্র অজ সকহিং ন মারী। জিনকী হো তুম রক্ষাকারী॥
Vishnu rudra aja sakahim na mari Jinaki ho tuma rakshakari
অর্থ:Vishnu, Rudra and Brahma (the unborn) cannot be slain — they whose protector you are.
রক্ত দন্তিকা ঔর শতাক্ষী। নাম অপার হৈ দানব ভক্ষী॥
Rakta dantika aura shatakshi Nama apara hai danava bhakshi
অর্থ:Raktadantika and Shatakshi — your names are countless, O devourer of demons.
দুর্গম কাজ ধরা পর কীন্হা। দুর্গা নাম সকল জগ লীন্হা॥
Durgama kaja dhara para kinha Durga nama sakala jaga linha
অর্থ:You accomplished impossible deeds upon the earth; the whole world took up the name 'Durga'.
দুর্গ আদি হরনী তূ মাতা। কৃপা করহু জব জব সুখদাতা॥
Durga adi harani tu mata Kripa karahu jaba jaba sukhadata
অর্থ:You are the Mother who removes every difficulty (durga); show grace whenever needed, O giver of joy.
নৃপ কোপিত জো মারন চাহৈ। কানন মেং ঘেরে মৃগ নাহৈ॥
Nripa kopita jo marana chahai Kanana mem ghere mriga nahai
অর্থ:When an angry king seeks to kill, or one is hemmed in by beasts in the forest —
সাগর মধ্য পোত কে ভংগে। অতি তূফান নহিং কোঊ সংগে॥
Sagara madhya pota ke bhamge Ati tuphana nahim kou samge
অর্থ:— when a ship breaks in mid-ocean amid a great storm, with no companion near —
ভূত প্রেত বাধা যা দুঃখ মেং। হো দরিদ্র অথবা সংকট মেং॥
Bhuta preta badha ya duhkha mem Ho daridra athava samkata mem
অর্থ:— in the affliction of ghosts and spirits, in poverty or in calamity —
নাম জপে মংগল সব হোঈ। সংশয ইসমেং করই ন কোঈ॥
Nama jape mamgala saba hoi Samshaya isamem karai na koi
অর্থ:— chanting your name, all becomes auspicious; let none harbour any doubt in this.
পুত্রহীন জো আতুর ভাঈ। সবৈ ছাংড়ি পূজেং এহি মাঈ॥
Putrahina jo atura bhai Sabai chhamड़i pujem ehi mai
অর্থ:The sonless one, the anxious one — abandoning all else, let them worship this Mother.
করৈ পাঠ নিত যহ চালীসা। হোয পুত্র সুন্দর গুণ ঈসা॥
Karai patha nita yaha chalisa Hoya putra sundara guna isa
অর্থ:Whoever recites this Chalisa daily obtains a son, beautiful and virtuous as Isha.
ধূপাদিক নৈবেদ্য চঢাবৈ। সংকট রহিত অবশ্য হো জাবৈ॥
Dhupadika naivedya chadhavai Samkata rahita avashya ho javai
অর্থ:Offering incense and food-offerings, one surely becomes free of calamity.
ভক্তি মাতু কী করৈ হমেশা। নিকট ন আবৈ তাহি কলেশা॥
Bhakti matu ki karai hamesha Nikata na avai tahi kalesha
অর্থ:Whoever ever performs devotion to the Mother — no affliction comes near them.
বংদী পাঠ করেং শত বারা। বংদী পাশ দূর হো সারা॥
Bamdi patha karem shata bara Bamdi pasha dura ho sara
অর্থ:The prisoner who recites it a hundred times has every bond of captivity loosed.
করহু কৃপা ভবমুক্তি ভবানী। মো কহং দাস সদা নিজ জানী॥
Karahu kripa bhavamukti bhavani Mo kaham dasa sada nija jani
অর্থ:Show grace and grant liberation, O Bhavani, ever knowing me as your own servant.
মাতা সূরজ কান্তি তব, অংধকার মম রূপ। ডূবন তে রক্ষা করহু, পরূং ন মৈং ভব-কূপ॥
Mata suraja kanti tava, amdhakara mama rupa Dubana te raksha karahu, parum na maim bhava-kupa
অর্থ:O Mother, yours is the radiance of the sun, mine the form of darkness; save me from drowning, that I fall not into the well of existence.
বল বুদ্ধি বিদ্যা দেহুং মোহি, সুনহু সরস্বতি মাতু। অধম রামসাগরহিং তুম, আশ্রয দেউ পুনাতু॥
Bala buddhi vidya dehum mohi, sunahu sarasvati matu Adhama ramasagarahim tuma, ashraya deu punatu
অর্থ:Grant me strength, intellect and learning; hear me, O Mother Saraswati; O purifier, give shelter to the lowly Ramsagar.

Saraswati Chalisa পাঠের নিয়ম
Sit before an image of Goddess Saraswati, ideally in white, with books or instruments placed before her. Offer white flowers, light a lamp, and recite the opening dohas and the forty chaupais with a calm, focused mind. Students recite it before study and examinations; Vasant Panchami is the most auspicious day.
