Marathi aarti tradition (Varkari sampradaya) · Sant Namdev · 13th century CE

Yuge Atthavees is the principal aarti of Vithoba, the deity of Pandharpur, composed by Sant Namdev. It tells how the Supreme Lord came to Pandharpur to honour His devotee Pundalik — who, absorbed in serving his parents, threw down a brick for the Lord to wait upon — and has stood there with hands on His hips for twenty-eight ages ever since. The aarti paints the temple's living worship: Rukmini at the Lord's side, the Chandrabhaga at His feet, gods and Garuda and Hanuman in attendance, and the great throngs of singing, dancing Vaishnavas who come on the Ashadhi and Kartiki pilgrimages.

ଶାସ୍ତ୍ରରେ କୁହାଯାଇଥିବା ପରି

The aarti proclaims that by 'darshana-hela-matre' — a mere instant of beholding Vitthal — and a bath in the Chandrabhaga, the devotee attains mukti (liberation). Varkari tradition holds that the Lord, who has waited twenty-eight ages on the brick, turns away none who come to Pandharpur with love.

It means 'twenty-eight ages'. The aarti opens by saying that Vitthal has stood upon the brick at Pandharpur for twenty-eight yugas, waiting to give darshan to His devotees ever since He came to meet His devotee Pundalik.
Pundalik was a devotee whose service to his aged parents so pleased the Lord that Krishna came to him at Pandharpur. Busy serving his parents, Pundalik tossed a brick for the Lord to stand on; the Lord waited there, and so Vitthal stands on the brick to this day.
It bears the signature of Sant Namdev (13th century), the Varkari saint of Pandharpur, whose name appears in the final verse: 'Keshavasi Namdev bhave ovaliti' (Namdev waves the lamp before Keshava with devotion).
The Chandrabhaga (also called the Bhima) is the sacred river that flows past Pandharpur in a crescent (chandra) shape. Pilgrims bathe in it during the Ashadhi and Kartiki Wari, and the aarti says a bath there and a moment's darshan of Vitthal grant liberation.
