উৎপত্তি ও কাহিনি

In the Hanuman Chalisa, after hailing Hanuman as the ocean of wisdom, Goswami Tulsidas devotes this second verse to establishing who Hanuman is: the faithful messenger of Lord Rama and the abode of immeasurable strength, born of mother Anjana and the wind-god. The line distils the dual nature celebrated throughout the Ramayana — Hanuman's perfect devotion joined with his unmatched might.

It is excellent to recite before exercise, exertion, examinations or any demanding undertaking, and forms part of the full Hanuman Chalisa recitation.

It means 'the messenger of Rama, the abode of immeasurable strength.' 'Doot' is messenger, 'Atulit' means incomparable/immeasurable, 'Bal' is strength, and 'Dhama' is abode — so Hanuman is praised as Rama's envoy and the dwelling-place of limitless power.

Anjani-Putra means 'son of Anjana', his mother, and Pavansut (Pavan-Sut) means 'son of the wind-god Pavan/Vayu', his divine father. Both names are among Hanuman's most beloved and are invoked to call upon him.

It is the second chaupai of the Hanuman Chalisa, following the opening verse 'Jai Hanuman Gyan Gun Sagar.' It introduces Hanuman's identity as Rama's messenger and the seat of immeasurable strength.

Because it salutes Hanuman as 'Atulit Bal Dhama' — the abode of incomparable strength — devotees chant it to draw upon his power for courage, vigour and the energy to face hard tasks, while remaining humbly devoted to Rama like Hanuman himself.
