The Gauri Dashakam reflects Adi Shankaracharya's vision of the Goddess as Brahman itself in its dynamic, creative aspect (Shakti). While teaching the non-dual Absolute, Shankara composed many hymns to the Divine Mother; here he praises Gauri as the lotus-eyed Mother who is at once the transcendent Sat-Chit-Ananda sought by yogis and the gracious deity dwelling with Shiva on Kailasa. The hymn weaves together Advaitic metaphysics, Kundalini yoga and tender devotion.

Meaning:1. ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਕਮਲਨਯਨਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਗੌਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਤੁਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਲੀਲਾਮਾਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ, ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਹਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਾਤੀਤ ਯੋਗੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਹਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਿਰਕਾਲ ਖੋਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਉਦਿਤ ਸੂਰਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੰਕਤੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਦ੍ਯੁਤਿਪੁੰਜ ਹੈ।

Meaning:4. ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਕਮਲਨਯਨਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਗੌਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਤੁਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ 'ਅ' ਤੋਂ 'ਕ੍ਸ਼' ਤੱਕ ਸਮੂਹ ਅੱਖਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਲਸਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਹਰ ਭੂਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਤਸਮੂਹ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸਵਿਤਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸ਼ਬਦਬ੍ਰਹਮ-ਆਨੰਦਮਯੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।

Meaning:7. ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਕਮਲਨਯਨਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਗੌਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਤੁਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਉਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂਡ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪੁਨਃ ਪ੍ਰਕਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ — ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਰਜਤਾਦ੍ਰਿ (ਕੈਲਾਸ਼) ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Meaning:10. ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕਮਲਨਯਨਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਗੌਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਤੁਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਕਮਲ ਦੇ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਤ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਸ਼ਾ-ਪਾਸ਼ ਰੂਪੀ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ਼ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ — ਜੋ ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੇ ਅਰਧਾਂਗ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਅਰਧਨਾਰੀਸ਼ਵਰ ਰੂਪ)।

How to Chant ਗੌਰੀਦਸ਼ਕਮ੍

Sit facing east before an image of Gauri/Parvati, recite the ten verses slowly while contemplating their meaning, and finish with the eleventh phala-shruti verse.
