Origin & Story

Durga Saptashati Chapter 11 · Sage Markandeya (Markandeya Purana) · Ancient (part of the Markandeya Purana, c. 400–600 CE)

After the Goddess slays the great asura Shumbha, Indra and the gods — their lotus-faces beaming with joy — pour out the Narayani Stuti in praise of Katyayani. In this central portion they salute her in each of her cosmic Mother-forms (the Matrikas), the very energies that had emerged from the gods to fight Raktabija and the demon hosts, recognising that the single Goddess Narayani manifests as Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi, Aindri, Shivaduti and Chamunda.

As told in scripture

Devotees hold that reciting these verses surrounds them with the protective power of all the Mother-forms at once — Brahmani's serenity, Vaishnavi's preservation and Chamunda's fierce destruction of evil — so that, as the gods were rescued from the demon armies, the worshipper too is shielded on every side from danger.

They are Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi (Narasimhi), Aindri, Shivaduti and Chamunda — the Mother-energies who carry the powers of Brahma, Shiva, Kumara, Vishnu, Varaha, Narasimha, Indra, and the fierce slaying forms of the Goddess.
It is part of the Narayani Stuti in Chapter 11, verses 12–20, sung by Indra and the gods after the slaying of Shumbha. Each verse ends with the refrain 'Narayani Namostute.'
