Word-by-Word Breakdown
Origin & History
Source: Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam) Chapter 11 — Narayani Stuti, verses 28, 11, 9; from the Markandeya Purana
Author: Sage Markandeya (traditional)
Period: Ancient (the Devi Mahatmyam is dated to c. 5th-6th century CE)
When the Goddess had slain Shumbha and freed the three worlds, Indra and the gods sang the Narayani Stuti in gratitude. Amid its praises they declared that, pleased, she takes away every disease, and that those who take refuge in her know no calamity. These lines — together with the great refrains 'Sharanagata-dinarta-paritrana-parayane' and 'Sarva-mangala-mangalye' — became among the most recited prayers to the Mother for health, refuge and auspiciousness.
