The Legend of Lord Ram

Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, was born as the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, to rid the earth of the demon-king Ravana. Noble, truthful and devoted to dharma, Rama won the hand of Sita, daughter of King Janaka, by lifting and stringing the mighty bow of Shiva that none other could even move.

On the eve of his coronation, through the scheming of a queen, Rama was exiled to the forest for fourteen years. With unwavering grace he obeyed, and Sita and his devoted brother Lakshmana went with him. In the forest the demon-king Ravana, by a trick, carried Sita away to his island kingdom of Lanka. Grief-stricken, Rama allied with the vanaras, and his greatest devotee Hanuman leapt across the sea, found Sita, and brought back word of her.

Rama built a bridge across the ocean, marched upon Lanka, and in a great war slew Ravana and freed Sita. Returning at last to Ayodhya after fourteen years, he was crowned king, and his reign — Ram Rajya — became the very ideal of a just and righteous age. His homecoming is celebrated each year as Diwali, and his victory over Ravana as Dussehra.

Lord Ram Mantras — Frequently Asked Questions

The simple "Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram" (the Taraka mantra) and the name "Ram" itself are supremely powerful — chanting Rama's name once is said to equal the thousand names of Vishnu. The Ram Raksha Stotra is the great protective armour, and the Ram Chalisa is recited daily.
Ram Navami (Rama's birth) is the most auspicious, along with Tuesdays. The Ram Raksha Stotra is often recited every morning for protection.
Composed by Sage Budha Kaushika, it invokes Rama's protection over every part of the body, forming a "diamond cage" (Vajra-Panjara) around the devotee that shields from danger, illness and evil.
