Origin & History

Source: Puranic / Tantric tradition (Ashtottara-shatanama of Kubera)

Author: Traditional (Vedic-Puranic lineage)

Period: Classical

Kubera was a great ascetic, grandson of Pulastya and son of Vishravana, who through long austerities to Lord Brahma earned the guardianship of all divine wealth, lordship over the Yakshas and Guhyakas, the rule of the golden city Alaka, the flying Pushpaka Vimana, and the post of regent of the northern direction. A close friend and devotee of Shiva, he dwells near Kailasa. His one hundred and eight names gather these epithets — Dhanada, Nidhisha, Yakshesha, Alakadhipati and the rest — into a single garland of praise used in his worship for prosperity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Kubera Ashtottara Shatanamavali?
It is a sacred list of 108 (ashtottara-shatam) names of Lord Kubera, the god of wealth and treasurer of the gods. Each name highlights a quality, title or deed of Kubera and is chanted with 'Om' before and 'Namah' after, as an offering of devotion.
What are the benefits of chanting Kubera's 108 names?
It is traditionally chanted to attract wealth, prosperity and financial stability, to clear debts and obstacles in earning, and to invite lasting abundance into the home and business. It also cultivates the dharmic, generous attitude toward wealth that Kubera represents.
When is the best time to recite it?
Dhanteras and Diwali are the most auspicious days, along with Akshaya Tritiya and Thursdays. Facing north (Kubera's direction) while reciting enhances the effect, and a 40-day daily practice is often undertaken for a specific financial goal.
How is Kubera related to Ravana?
Kubera is the elder half-brother of Ravana; both were grandsons of Sage Pulastya through Sage Vishravana. While Ravana pursued conquest, Kubera became the righteous keeper of the gods' wealth, ruling the golden city of Alaka near Mount Kailasa.
