Pratyangira arose from the fierce energies of Shiva and Vishnu to pacify and counter destructive forces. In one well-known tradition she is born of the matted lock (Sharabha-Pratyangira) when the Lord's wrath needed to be turned into protective grace; in the Narasimha stream she is Narasimhi, the lioness-faced Shakti who completes the protective power of the Man-Lion.
