kundasumavṛndasamamandahasitāsyaṃ

कुन्दसुमवृन्दसममन्दहसितास्यं नन्दकुलनन्दभरतुन्दलनकन्दम् पूतनिजगीतलवधूतदुरितं तं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

नीलतरजालधरभालहरिरम्यं लोलतरशीलयुतबालजनलीलम् जालनतिशीलमपि पालयितुकामं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

Meaningउस गुरुवायुर के नाथ को हृदय-कमल में स्थापित करो, जो गहरे जलधर (मेघ) समान नील एवं रमणीय हैं, बाल-लीला में रत हैं, तथा थोड़ा सा भी नमन करने वालों की भी रक्षा करना चाहते हैं। (2)

कंसरणहिंसमिह संसरणजात- क्लान्तिभरशान्तिकरकान्तिझरवीतम् वातमुखधातुजनिपातभयघातं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

kaṃsaraṇahiṃsamiha saṃsaraṇajāta- klāntibharaśāntikarakāntijharavītam | vātamukhadhātujanipātabhayaghātaṃ vātapuranāthamimamātanu hṛdabje || 3 ||

Meaningउस गुरुवायुर के नाथ को हृदय में स्थापित करो, जो कंस के संहारक हैं, जो संसार-जनित क्लान्ति को शान्त करने वाली कान्ति-धारा से व्याप्त हैं, तथा वात आदि धातुओं से उत्पन्न रोग-भय का नाश करते हैं। (3)

jātudhuripātukamihāturajanaṃ drāk

जातुधुरिपातुकमिहातुरजनं द्राक् शोकभरमूकमपि तोकमिव पान्तम् भृङ्गरुचिसङ्गरकृदङ्गलतिकं तं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

jātudhuripātukamihāturajanaṃ drāk śokabharamūkamapi tokamiva pāntam | bhṛṅgarucisaṅgarakṛdaṅgalatikaṃ taṃ vātapuranāthamimamātanu hṛdabje || 4 ||

Meaningउस गुरुवायुर के नाथ को हृदय में स्थापित करो, जो आतुर जनों की तत्क्षण रक्षा करते हैं — शोक के भार से मूक हुए जीव की भी शिशु के समान रक्षा करते हैं — जिनका अङ्ग भ्रमर की कान्ति-समान लता-सदृश सुन्दर है। (4)

पापभवतापभरकोपशमनार्था- श्वासकरभासमृदुहासरुचिरास्यम् रोगचयभोगभयवेगहरमेकं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

pāpabhavatāpabharakopaśamanārthā- śvāsakarabhāsamṛduhāsarucirāsyam | rogacayabhogabhayavegaharamekaṃ vātapuranāthamimamātanu hṛdabje || 5 ||

Meaningउस एकमात्र गुरुवायुर के नाथ को हृदय में स्थापित करो, जिनका आश्वासन देने वाला, मृदु हास से रुचिर मुख पाप एवं भव-ताप से उत्पन्न कोप का शमन करता है, और जो रोग-समूह, भोग एवं भय के वेग का हरण करते हैं। (5)

घोषकुलदोषहरवेषमुपयान्तं पूषशतदूषकविभूषणगणाढ्यम् भुक्तिमपि मुक्तिमतिभक्तिषु ददानं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

Meaningउस गुरुवायुर के नाथ को हृदय में स्थापित करो, जो गोपकुल के दोष-नाशक वेष में प्रकट होते हैं, सौ सूर्यों को मात देने वाले आभूषण-समूह से सुसज्जित हैं, तथा अत्यन्त भक्तिमानों को भुक्ति एवं मुक्ति दोनों प्रदान करते हैं। (6)

pāpakadurāpamatitāpaharaśobha-

पापकदुरापमतितापहरशोभ- स्वापघनमामतदुमापतिसमेतम् दूनतरदीनसुखदानकृतदीक्षं वातपुरनाथमिममातनु हृदब्जे

pāpakadurāpamatitāpaharaśobha- svāpaghanamāmatadumāpatisametam | dūnataradīnasukhadānakṛtadīkṣaṃ vātapuranāthamimamātanu hṛdabje || 7 ||

Meaningउस गुरुवायुर के नाथ को हृदय में स्थापित करो, जिनकी शोभा दुर्जनों के लिए दुर्लभ है तथा महान् ताप का हरण करती है — जो विश्राम के घन (मेघ) हैं — जो यहाँ उमापति (शिव) सहित विराजमान हैं, तथा अत्यन्त दीन-दुखियों को सुख देने का व्रत किए हुए हैं। (7)

This ashtakam was composed by the great Sanskrit savant Mahamahopadhyaya Ganapati Sastri during his stay at the Guruvayur temple in Kerala, overwhelmed by the beauty of Lord Guruvayurappan. Set in an intricate, musical metre, its eight verses describe the Lord's jasmine-soft smile, His cloud-dark form, His childhood sports, and His grace as protector and healer of His devotees, each verse ending with the loving instruction to enshrine Him in the heart-lotus.
