Word-by-Word Breakdown
Origin & History
Source: Durga Saptashati Chapter 12
Author: Maharshi Markandeya (traditionally ascribed)
Period: Puranic period (c. 5th–6th century CE for the Devi Mahatmya)
The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons and, in Chapter 12, the phalashruti of her worship. Here the Goddess declares that her Mahatmya quells pestilence and every kind of portent, and promises that wherever it is recited in her sanctuary she will never depart — her presence abiding there forever. She bids it be recited and heard at all worship, fire-rites and festivals, and assures her devotees that she lovingly accepts whatever offerings are made to her, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
