देवि प्रसीद परिपालय नोऽरिभीते- र्नित्यं यथासुरवधादधुनैव सद्यः । पापानि सर्वजगतां प्रशमं नयाशु उत्पातपाकजनितांश्च महोपसर्गान् ॥

Meaningहे देवी! प्रसन्न होइए; जैसे अभी असुर-वध से आपने हमारी रक्षा की, वैसे ही सदा हमें शत्रु-भय से बचाइए। और समस्त जगत् के पापों तथा उत्पातों से उत्पन्न महान् उपसर्गों को शीघ्र शान्त कीजिए।

प्रणतानां प्रसीद त्वं देवि विश्वार्तिहारिणि । त्रैलोक्यवासिनामीड्ये लोकानां वरदा भव ॥

praṇatānāṃ prasīda tvaṃ devi viśvārtihāriṇi trailokyavāsināmīḍye lokānāṃ varadā bhava

Meaningहे विश्व की पीड़ा हरने वाली देवी! हम प्रणत जनों पर प्रसन्न होइए; हे त्रैलोक्य-निवासियों द्वारा वन्दनीय! लोकों को वर देने वाली बनिए!

देव्युवाच वरदाहं सुरगणा वरं यन्मनसेच्छथ । तं वृणुध्वं प्रयच्छामि जगतामुपकारकम् ॥

devyuvāca varadāhaṃ suragaṇā varaṃ yanmanasecchatha taṃ vṛṇudhvaṃ prayacchāmi jagatāmupakārakam

Meaningदेवी बोलीं — हे देवगण! मैं वरदायिनी हूँ। मन से जो वर चाहते हो, वही माँग लो; जगत् का उपकार करने वाला वह वर मैं प्रदान करती हूँ।

देवा ऊचुः सर्वाबाधाप्रशमनं त्रैलोक्यस्याखिलेश्वरि । एवमेव त्वया कार्यमस्मद्वैरिविनाशनम् ॥

devā ūcuḥ sarvābādhāpraśamanaṃ trailokyasyākhileśvari evameva tvayā kāryamasmadvairivināśanam

taṃ vṛṇudhvaṃ prayacchāmi

choose that; I shall grant it

जगताम् उपकारकम्

jagatām upakārakam

for the good of the worlds

सर्वाबाधाप्रशमनं त्रैलोक्यस्य अखिलेश्वरि

sarvābādhāpraśamanaṃ trailokyasya akhileśvari

the quelling of all the calamities of the three worlds, O Sovereign of all

एवम् एव त्वया कार्यम् अस्मद्वैरिविनाशनम्

Period: Puranic period (c. 5th–6th century CE for the Devi Mahatmya)

The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons. In Chapter 11, after Shumbha is slain, the gods sing the Narayani Stuti and bring it to a close with this earnest prayer: that the Goddess protect them always from foes, end the sins and calamities of all the worlds, and be the bestower of boons to the three worlds. Moved, the Goddess offers them whatever boon they wish. With perfect selflessness the gods ask not for themselves but only that she forever quell the world's calamities and destroy the enemies of dharma — and so she promises, foretelling her future descents whenever danger arises.
