Origin & History

Source: Opening names of the Lalita Sahasranama, Brahmanda Purana (Lalitopakhyana)

Author: The eight Vagdevatas (revealed in the Lalitopakhyana)

Period: Ancient (Puranic)

In the Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana, the gods, oppressed by the demon Bhandasura, performed a great sacrifice from whose fire of consciousness the Goddess Lalita arose. At her command, the eight Vagdevatas composed her thousand names. These opening names hail her birth from the fire of consciousness and her arming for the cosmic battle that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the first three names of the Lalita Sahasranama?
They are Sri Mata (the Divine Mother), Sri Maharajni (the great Empress), and Sri Simhasaneshvari (the queen on the lion throne). They open the thousand names of the Goddess Lalita.
What does 'Chidagni-kunda-sambhuta' mean?
It means 'born from the fire-pit of consciousness'. The Goddess Lalita is said to have manifested from the sacrificial fire of pure consciousness to destroy the demon Bhandasura and protect the gods.
Why does the Goddess hold a noose, goad, bow and arrows?
These are symbolic: the noose is attachment (raga), the goad is anger (krodha), the bow is the mind (sugarcane), and the five arrows are the five subtle elements (tanmatras). The devotee surrenders these inner forces to the Mother.
Can I recite just the opening names?
Yes. While the full Sahasranama has a thousand names, the opening verses beginning with Sri Mata Sri Maharajni form a complete and revered invocation of the Divine Mother.
