In these verses from Chapter 12 of the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati), the Goddess declares the power of her Mahatmya to quell pestilence and every portent, and promises that wherever it is duly recited in her sanctuary she will never depart — her living presence abiding there always. Verse 1

upasargānaśeṣāṃstu mahāmārīsamudbhavān tathā trividhamutpātaṃ māhātmyaṃ śamayenmama

Meaning:May my Mahatmya quell all the calamities born of great pestilence (mahamari), and the threefold portents (utpata).

Verse 2

yatraitatpaṭhyate samyaṅnityamāyatane mama sadā na tadvimokṣyāmi sānnidhyaṃ tatra me sthitam

Meaning:Where this is duly recited ever in my sanctuary, there I shall never forsake that place; my presence stands fixed there.

Verse 3

balipradāne pūjāyāmagnikārye mahotsave sarvaṃ mamaitanmāhātmyam uccāryaṃ śrāvyameva ca

Meaning:At the offering of bali (sacrifice), at worship, in the fire-rite and at a great festival — all this my Mahatmya is to be recited and to be heard.

jānatājānatā vāpi balipūjāṃ yathā kṛtām pratīkṣiṣyāmyahaṃ prītyā vahnihomaṃ tathākṛtam
