चाणक्य नीति का यह प्रसिद्ध पालन-पोषण विषयक श्लोक बालक के लालन-पालन की तीन अवस्थाएँ बताता है — पाँच वर्ष का स्नेहपूर्ण लाड़, दस वर्ष का दृढ़ अनुशासन एवं प्रशिक्षण, और सोलहवें वर्ष से मित्र-तुल्य आदर एवं खुलापन। यह बालक के बड़े होने के साथ कोमलता, मार्गदर्शन और विश्वास को सन्तुलित करता हुआ, बच्चों के पालन-पोषण पर सर्वाधिक उद्धृत सूक्तियों में से एक है।

Chanakya, who himself trained the young Chandragupta into an emperor, gave deep thought to the shaping of the young. This verse on child-rearing distils that experience into three stages — indulgence, discipline and friendship — and has become one of the most widely quoted guides to parenting in the Indian tradition.

अर्थ:बालक का पाँच वर्ष तक प्रेमपूर्वक लाड़-दुलार करना चाहिए; अगले दस वर्ष तक उसे दृढ़ता से अनुशासित एवं मार्गदर्शित करना चाहिए; किन्तु जब वह सोलहवें वर्ष में पहुँच जाए, तब उसके साथ मित्र के समान व्यवहार करना चाहिए। चाणक्य पालन-पोषण का एक कालजयी आदर्श देते हैं, जिसमें स्नेह, अनुशासन और मैत्री को बालक की वृद्धि की बदलती अवस्थाओं के अनुरूप जोड़ा गया है।
