Origin & Story

Vishnu Sahasranama, phalashruti (concluding verses) · Sage Veda Vyasa (Mahabharata tradition) · Itihasa period (traditionally Dvapara Yuga)

In the closing dialogue appended to the Vishnu Sahasranama, Parvati asks Shiva for a simple means by which the learned daily recite the thousand names of Vishnu. Shiva replies with this verse — that he himself revels in the enchanting name of Rama, and that the single name 'Rama' is equal to the entire Sahasranama. The line became one of the most cherished testimonies to the power of the Rama Nama.

As told in scripture

Tradition holds that Shiva, the eternal yogi, sustains himself by ceaselessly chanting the Rama Nama, and that he whispers the Taraka mantra into the ear of those who die at Kashi, granting them liberation. This verse enshrines his own declaration that one utterance of 'Rama' carries the merit of all thousand names of the Lord.
