Origin & Story

Soundarya Lahari, Verse 27 · Adi Shankaracharya · c. 8th century CE

From the Ananda Lahari, this verse is celebrated as the high point of self-surrender within the hymn, echoing the spirit of the well-known atma-nivedana prayers. Composed in the Shikharini metre, it is often recited on its own as a complete teaching on offering one's whole life as worship of the Goddess.

As told in scripture

Devotees say that one who lives by this verse, offering every act to the Mother, finds the burden of ritual lifted and the whole of life sanctified, for the Goddess accepts the smallest deed done in the spirit of surrender as Her full worship.

Yes — only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
It is the teaching of total self-surrender (atma-nivedana): the devotee prays that every ordinary action — speaking, moving the hands, walking, eating, resting, enjoying — be accepted as worship of the Goddess. With this attitude, the whole of life becomes uninterrupted puja.
By inner attitude. Speech offered to Her becomes japa, hand movements become mudras, walking becomes circumambulation, eating becomes oblation, lying down becomes prostration, and all comforts become self-offering. The acts remain ordinary, but the spirit of surrender makes them divine.
Yes, especially so. It assures the devotee that even without formal ritual, a life lived in the spirit of self-surrender is itself complete worship of the Divine Mother, dear to Her and free of anxiety over ceremonial detail.
Atma-arpana means the offering of oneself. The verse asks that every enjoyment and every action be given to the Goddess as an offering of the self, so that nothing in life is held back from Her.
