शनि देव Mantras

The deity of justice and karma, lord of the planet Saturn.

Lord Shani — Shani Dev, the son of Surya and lord of the planet Saturn — is the great dispenser of justice who returns to each soul the fruit of its own karma. Feared for the hard lessons of Sade Sati and Dhaiya, he is in truth the most impartial of deities, rewarding the righteous and humbling the arrogant. He is propitiated on Saturdays, and Lord Hanuman is worshipped alongside him for protection from his severity. His prayers and the protective Hanuman mantras follow.

The Legend of Lord Shani (Shani Dev)

It is told that once, when the great Hanuman sat absorbed in the remembrance of Lord Rama, Shani — the stern lord of Saturn, proud of the power of his gaze — came and demanded to cast his shadow upon him, boasting that none could escape his influence. Hanuman gently warned him to go his way.

When Shani would not relent and climbed upon him to trouble him, Hanuman caught him fast and pressed him hard — leaping and striding all the while — until Shani was bruised and crying out in pain. At last, humbled and begging release, Shani promised that he would never again trouble Hanuman, nor any devotee who remembers Hanuman with faith.

For his relief Shani sought oil to soothe his wounds — and so to this day devotees offer oil to Shani Dev and recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays for protection from his severity. The tale teaches that Shani, the impartial judge of karma, bows before sincere devotion, and that the humble and the righteous need not fear even the hardest of the planets.

Lord Shani (Shani Dev) Mantras — Frequently Asked Questions

The Shani Beej mantra "Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah" and the simple "Om Shham Shanaischaraya Namah" are chanted on Saturdays. The Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra (composed by King Dasharatha) is the classic prayer to soften Shani, and the Hanuman Chalisa is recited for protection from his harsh effects.
Worship on Saturdays: light a mustard/sesame-oil lamp under a Peepal tree, offer black sesame, black cloth and urad dal, recite the Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra and Hanuman Chalisa, and above all act with honesty, humility and service to the poor and labourers — Shani is pleased by righteous conduct, not bribery.
By tradition Shani promised Lord Hanuman that he would not trouble Hanuman's devotees. So those facing Sade Sati or a difficult Shani recite the Hanuman Chalisa and Bajrang Baan on Saturdays and Tuesdays to gain protection from Shani's severity.
