In the Brahmanda Purana, the sage Agastya, after learning the greatness of the Goddess, was taught the secret of her worship by Lord Hayagriva, an incarnation of Vishnu and lord of wisdom. As the crown of this teaching, Hayagriva imparted the Lalita Trishati — three hundred names structured on the fifteen syllables of the Panchadashi mantra — beginning with the names from the syllable 'Ka'.
