Khatu Shyam Ji is Barbarika, the mighty grandson of Bhima, whose head — granted the boon to witness the entire Mahabharata war — was worshipped by Krishna. Pleased with his supreme sacrifice and devotion, Krishna granted that in the Kali Yuga he would be worshipped by Krishna's own name, Shyam, and would fulfil the wishes of his devotees.
