The Medha Suktam appears in the Taittiriya Aranyaka of the Krishna Yajurveda, within the Mahanarayana Upanishad. In the Vedic gurukula tradition, knowledge was preserved through hearing and memory, so intellect (medha) and retentive power were prized above all. This suktam was recited by students and teachers as a prayer that the goddess Medha — identified with Saraswati — would dwell in them, granting sharp intelligence, eloquent speech, and the power to retain the sacred teachings heard from the guru. A shorter related set of Medha mantras also survives as a khila (appendix) hymn to the Rigveda.

By tradition, students who recite the Medha Suktam with faith before study find that what they hear is retained as if engraved — the very prayer 'shrutam me gopaya' (guard what I have heard) is said to bless the memory so that learning is never lost. It is a favourite of Vedic pandits, who hold that a child who chants it daily grows in intellect, speech and confidence.

ఓం యశ్ఛన్దసామృషభో విశ్వరూపః। ఛన్దోభ్యోఽధ్యమృతాత్సమ్బభూవ। స మేన్ద్రో మేధయా స్పృణోతు। అమృతస్య దేవధారణో భూయాసమ్॥
Om yaśchandasāmṛṣabho viśvarūpaḥ; chandobhyo'dhyamṛtātsambabhūva; sa mendro medhayā spṛṇotu; amṛtasya devadhāraṇo bhūyāsam.
అర్థం:ॐ। जो वेद-छन्दों में श्रेष्ठ (वृषभ), विश्वरूप तथा अमृतस्वरूप ओंकार से प्रकट हुआ — वह इन्द्र मुझे मेधा (बुद्धि) से सम्पन्न करे; मैं अमृत (दिव्य ज्ञान) का धारण करने वाला बनूँ।
శరీరం మే విచర్షణమ్। జిహ్వా మే మధుమత్తమా। కర్ణాభ్యాం భూరి విశ్రువమ్। బ్రహ్మణః కోశోఽసి మేధయా పిహితః। శ్రుతం మే గోపాయ॥ ఓం శాన్తిః శాన్తిః శాన్తిః॥
Śarīraṃ me vicarṣaṇam; jihvā me madhumattamā; karṇābhyāṃ bhūri viśruvam; brahmaṇaḥ kośo'si medhayā pihitaḥ; śrutaṃ me gopāya. Om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ.
అర్థం:मेरा शरीर सक्षम एवं तेजस्वी हो; मेरी जिह्वा अत्यन्त मधुर हो; मैं अपने कानों से बहुत कुछ (श्रेष्ठ ज्ञान) सुनूँ। तुम (मेधा) ब्रह्म का कोश हो, जो बुद्धि से आच्छादित है — मेरे सुने हुए ज्ञान की रक्षा करो। ॐ शान्ति शान्ति शान्ति।
ఓం మేధాదేవీ జుషమాణా న ఆగాద్విశ్వాచీ భద్రా సుమనస్యమానా। త్వయా జుష్టా నుదమానా దురుక్తాన్బృహద్వదేమ విదథే సువీరాః॥
Om medhādevī juṣamāṇā na āgādviśvācī bhadrā sumanasyamānā; tvayā juṣṭā nudamānā duruktānbṛhadvadema vidathe suvīrāḥ.
అర్థం:ॐ। प्रसन्न, विश्वव्यापिनी, कल्याणमयी एवं सुमनस्क मेधादेवी हमारे पास आएँ। तुम्हारी कृपा से कटु वचनों को दूर करते हुए, हम उत्तम सन्तान वाले होकर सभा में उच्च वाणी बोलें।
త్వయా జుష్ట ఋషిర్భవతి దేవి త్వయా బ్రహ్మాఽఽగతశ్రీరుత త్వయా। త్వయా జుష్టశ్చిత్రం విన్దతే వసు సా నో జుషస్వ ద్రవిణో న మేధే॥
Tvayā juṣṭa ṛṣirbhavati devi tvayā brahmā''gataśrīruta tvayā; tvayā juṣṭaśchitraṃ vindate vasu sā no juṣasva draviṇo na medhe.
అర్థం:हे देवी, तुम्हारी कृपा से मनुष्य ऋषि बन जाता है, तुम्हारे द्वारा ब्रह्मवेत्ता श्री प्राप्त करता है, तुम्हारे द्वारा वह विचित्र धन पाता है। अतः हे मेधे, अक्षय धन के समान हम पर प्रसन्न रहो।
మేధాం మ ఇన్ద్రో దదాతు మేధాం దేవీ సరస్వతీ। మేధాం మే అశ్వినావుభావాధత్తాం పుష్కరస్రజా॥
Medhāṃ ma indro dadātu medhāṃ devī sarasvatī; medhāṃ me aśvināvubhāvādhattāṃ puṣkarasrajā.
అర్థం:इन्द्र मुझे मेधा दे, देवी सरस्वती मुझे मेधा दे, कमल की माला धारण करने वाले दोनों अश्विनीकुमार मुझे मेधा प्रदान करें।
అప్సరాసు చ యా మేధా గన్ధర్వేషు చ యన్మనః। దైవీం మేధా సరస్వతీ సా మాం మేధా సురభిర్జుషతాం స్వాహా॥
Apsarāsu ca yā medhā gandharveṣu ca yanmanaḥ; daivīṃ medhā sarasvatī sā māṃ medhā surabhirjuṣatāṃ svāhā.
అర్థం:जो मेधा अप्सराओं में है, जो मन गन्धर्वों में है, तथा जो दिव्य मेधा सरस्वती है — वह सुगन्धित मेधा मुझमें प्रसन्नतापूर्वक निवास करे। स्वाहा।
ఆ మాం మేధా సురభిర్విశ్వరూపా హిరణ్యవర్ణా జగతీ జగమ్యా। ఊర్జస్వతీ పయసా పిన్వమానా సా మాం మేధా సుప్రతీకా జుషతామ్॥
Ā māṃ medhā surabhirviśvarūpā hiraṇyavarṇā jagatī jagamyā; ūrjasvatī payasā pinvamānā sā māṃ medhā supratīkā juṣatām.
అర్థం:विश्वरूपा, स्वर्णवर्णा, जगत् में विचरने वाली, ऊर्जावती एवं अमृतजल से पुष्ट सुगन्धित मेधा — वह सुमुखी मेधा मुझमें प्रीतिपूर्वक निवास करे।
మయి మేధాం మయి ప్రజాం మయ్యగ్నిస్తేజో దధాతు। మయి మేధాం మయి ప్రజాం మయీన్ద్ర ఇన్ద్రియం దధాతు। మయి మేధాం మయి ప్రజాం మయి సూర్యో భ్రాజో దధాతు॥
Mayi medhāṃ mayi prajāṃ mayyagnistejo dadhātu; mayi medhāṃ mayi prajāṃ mayīndra indriyaṃ dadhātu; mayi medhāṃ mayi prajāṃ mayi sūryo bhrājo dadhātu.
అర్థం:मुझमें अग्नि मेधा, सन्तान एवं तेज स्थापित करे; मुझमें इन्द्र मेधा, सन्तान एवं इन्द्रियबल स्थापित करे; मुझमें सूर्य मेधा, सन्तान एवं प्रकाश स्थापित करे।
ఓం మహాదేవ్యై చ విద్మహే బ్రహ్మపత్నీ చ ధీమహి। తన్నో వాణీ ప్రచోదయాత్॥ ఓం హంస హంసాయ విద్మహే పరమహంసాయ ధీమహి। తన్నో హంసః ప్రచోదయాత్॥ ఓం శాన్తిః శాన్తిః శాన్తిః॥
Om mahādevyai ca vidmahe brahmapatnī ca dhīmahi; tanno vāṇī pracodayāt. Om haṃsa haṃsāya vidmahe paramahaṃsāya dhīmahi; tanno haṃsaḥ pracodayāt. Om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ.
అర్థం:ॐ। हम महादेवी को जानें, ब्रह्मपत्नी का ध्यान करें; वह वाणी (सरस्वती) हमें प्रेरित करे। हम हंस को जानें, परमहंस का ध्यान करें; वह हंस हमें प्रेरित करे। ॐ शान्ति शान्ति शान्ति।

मेधा सूक्तम् పారాయణ విధి
Bathe and sit facing east before an image of Goddess Saraswati or simply with a calm mind. Light a lamp and recite the suktam slowly and clearly, dwelling on the meaning of each prayer for intellect. It is especially recited by students before examinations, at the start of Vedic study, and on Vasant Panchami. Conclude with the Medha (Saraswati) Gayatri and the threefold Shanti. Daily recitation, or 11 times, is traditional for sharpening the mind.
