The Prithvi Suktam is the opening hymn of the twelfth Kanda of the Atharvaveda — a vast and majestic prayer of sixty-three verses dedicated entirely to Bhumi, the Earth. It celebrates the Earth as the cosmic mother upholding the seas, mountains, rivers, plants, peoples and all that breathes, sustained by truth, order, austerity and sacrifice. Among Vedic hymns it stands out for its tender, filial vision of the Earth as mother and its explicit ethic of caring for and not harming her, and is widely cited today as an ancient charter of ecological reverence.

It is traditionally held that honouring the Earth with the Bhumi Sukta before tilling, building or settling on land pacifies the Earth and removes the faults of a site, so that those who dwell or labour there are blessed with stability, plentiful harvests and freedom from calamity — and that the Earth, treated as a mother, nourishes her devotees in return.

অর্থ:सत्य, विशाल और उग्र ऋत (ब्रह्माण्डीय व्यवस्था), दीक्षा, तप, ब्रह्म (वेदवाणी) और यज्ञ — ये पृथिवी को धारण करते हैं। भूत और भविष्य की स्वामिनी वह पृथिवी हमारे लिए विस्तृत लोक (स्थान) बनाए।
যস্যাং সমুদ্র উত সিন্ধুরাপো যস্যামন্নং কৃষ্টযঃ সংবভূবুঃ। যস্যামিদং জিন্বতি প্রাণদেজত্সা নো ভূমিঃ পূর্বপেযে দধাতু॥
Yasyāṁ samudra uta sindhur āpo yasyām annaṁ kṛṣṭayaḥ saṁbabhūvuḥ Yasyām idaṁ jinvati prāṇad ejat sā no bhūmiḥ pūrvapeye dadhātu
অর্থ:जिसमें समुद्र, नदियाँ और जल हैं; जिसमें अन्न और कृषक जन उत्पन्न हुए; जिसमें यह समस्त प्राणवान् और चर जगत् गति करता है — वह भूमि हमें श्रेष्ठ भाग प्रदान करे।
যস্যাশ্চতস্রঃ প্রদিশঃ পৃথিব্যা যস্যামন্নং কৃষ্টযঃ সংবভূবুঃ। যা বিভর্তি বহুধা প্রাণদেজত্সা নো ভূমির্গোষ্বপ্যন্নে দধাতু॥

অর্থ:जिसकी चारों दिशाएँ हैं, जिसमें अन्न और जन उत्पन्न हुए, जो अनेक रूपों में प्राणवान् चर जगत् को धारण करती है — वह भूमि हमें गौओं और अन्न में प्रतिष्ठित करे।
যাং রক্ষন্ত্যস্বপ্না বিশ্বদানীং দেবা ভূমিং পৃথিবীমপ্রমাদম্। সা নো মধু প্রিযং দুহামথো উক্ষতু বর্চসা॥
Yāṁ rakṣanty asvapnā viśvadānīṁ devā bhūmiṁ pṛthivīm apramādam Sā no madhu priyaṁ duhām atho ukṣatu varcasā
অর্থ:जिस पृथिवी की रक्षा निद्रारहित देवता सदा सावधानीपूर्वक करते हैं — वह हमारे लिए मधुर प्रिय पोषण (दुग्ध) दे और तेज से हमें सींचे।
উপ সর্প মাতরং ভূমিমেতাম্ উরুব্যচসং পৃথিবীং সুশেবাম্। ঊর্ণম্রদা যুবতির্দক্ষিণাবত এষা ত্বা পাতু নিরৃতেরুপস্থাত্॥
Upa sarpa mātaraṁ bhūmim etām uruvyacasaṁ pṛthivīṁ suśevām Ūrṇamradā yuvatir dakṣiṇāvata eṣā tvā pātu nirṛter upasthāt
অর্থ:इस माता भूमि के समीप जाओ — विस्तृत, अत्यन्त कल्याणकारी पृथिवी के; ऊन के समान कोमल, उदार युवती — वह तुम्हें विनाश (निरृति) की गोद से बचाए।
যত্তে ভূমে বিখনামি ক্ষিপ্রং তদপি রোহতু। মা তে মর্ম বিমৃগ্বরি মা তে হৃদযমর্পিপম্॥
Yat te bhūme vikhanāmi kṣipraṁ tad api rohatu Mā te marma vimṛgvari mā te hṛdayam arpipam
অর্থ:हे भूमि! तुम्हारा जो भी अंश मैं खोदता हूँ, वह शीघ्र पुनः उग आए; हे पवित्र करने वाली! मैं तुम्हारे मर्मस्थलों को न बेधूँ, तुम्हारे हृदय को घायल न करूँ।

पृथ्वी सूक्तम् (भूमि सूक्त) পাঠের নিয়ম
Recite with reverence and gratitude toward the Earth, ideally during a homa or while honouring Bhumi Devi, with proper Vedic svara if learnt. Begin with 'Om' and close with the Shanti Paath. Reflect on the Earth as a living mother, resolving to live in harmony with nature. It is highly auspicious for ceremonies involving land, building, farming and ecological well-being.
