Origin & History

Source: Rina-Vimochana Maha-Ganapati Stotram (traditional Ganapati stotra with viniyoga ascribed to Shukracharya)

Author: Traditional; the viniyoga ascribes its seership (rishi) to Shukracharya

Period: Classical / medieval Puranic-Tantric tradition

This stotra is preserved as a dedicated remedy (upaya) for those crushed by debt. Indian tradition treats debt ('rina') as a serious bondage — the scriptures speak of debts to the gods, sages and ancestors — and worship of the obstacle-remover Ganesha is held to dissolve such bonds. The viniyoga places it under the seership of Shukracharya, the preceptor of the asuras and lord of the wealth-giving planet Venus, framing it as a key that unlocks financial freedom. Its eight colour-forms culminate in the all-pervading 'sarvatmaka' Ganesha, after which the phalashruti boldly guarantees debt-clearance within six months of disciplined recitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Rinaharta / Rina Vimochana Ganapati Stotram for?
It is a special hymn to Ganesha chanted to gain freedom from debt ('rina' means debt and 'vimochana' or 'haran' means release). The closing verses explicitly promise that regular recitation clears one's debts and brings prosperity, which is why it is popular among those facing loans or financial difficulty.
Who is the rishi of this stotra and why?
The viniyoga names Shukracharya as the rishi. Shukracharya, the guru of the asuras, is master of the science of revival and renewal and is associated with wealth and the planet Shukra (Venus); his seership lends the hymn its authority over matters of money and debt.
How many times should I chant it?
The hymn itself prescribes recitation 'trisandhyam' — at dawn, noon and dusk. The phalashruti adds that within six months the debt is cut away, and that completing ten thousand recitations makes one debt-free and wealthy. A common practice is 11 times daily for 45 days.
Why does the hymn describe Ganesha in different colours?
Verses four through eight invoke Ganesha as white, red, dark, yellow and finally 'sarva-varna' (all colours). This worships the Lord in every form and through every kind of offering, symbolising that He pervades all and can resolve difficulties of every nature, including material ones like debt.
