Nalayira Divya Prabandham — Thiruppallandu (opening verses), by Periazhwar (Tamil, c. 8th-9th century CE) · Periazhwar (Vishnuchittar), Alwar saint · Tamil Bhakti era (c. 8th-9th century CE)
Periazhwar of Srivilliputhur was granted a vision of Lord Vishnu, and seeing the surpassing beauty and tenderness of the Lord, his heart was filled not with desire to ask, but with anxious love lest any harm should touch Him. So he sang the Thiruppallandu, wishing the Lord 'many years' of well-being, as a parent blesses a child. This hymn became the opening of the entire Divya Prabandham, and is sung first in all Sri Vaishnava worship.

Tradition tells that when Lord Vishnu appeared in the sky before Periazhwar at Madurai, the saint, fearing the evil eye might fall upon the Lord's beauty, at once sang 'Pallandu Pallandu' to protect Him — and the Lord, moved by such love, ever after accepted this blessing-song as the first offering in His worship.

ഏതെങ്കിലും വരിയിലോ ▶ ബട്ടണിലോ തൊട്ട് കേൾക്കൂ
പല്ലാണ്ടു പല്ലാണ്ടു പല്ലായിരത്താണ്ടു പലകോടി നൂരായിരമ് മല്ലാണ്ട തിണ്തോള് മണിവണ്ണാ ഉന് സേ̀വ്വടി സേ̀വ്വി തിരുക്കാപ്പു।
pallāṇḍu pallāṇḍu pallāyiraththāṇḍu palakōḍi nūṟāyiram mallāṇḍa thiṇthōḷ maṇivaṇṇā un sevvaḍi sevvi thirukkāppu.
അർഥം:तिरुप्पल्लाण्डु समस्त नालायिर दिव्य प्रबंधम् का आरंभिक स्तोत्र है, जिसे पेरियाष़्वार ने 'मंगलाशासनम्' रूप में गाया — अति-प्रेमवश स्वयं प्रभु के लिए की गई मंगलकामना।

aḍiyōmōḍum ninnōḍum pirivinṟi āyiram pallāṇḍu vaḍivāy ninvala mārbinil vāzhkinṟa mangaiyum pallāṇḍu vaḍivār sōthi valaththuṟaiyum suḍarāzhiyum pallāṇḍu paḍaipōr pukku muzhangum ap pāñchasanniyamum pallāṇḍē.
അർഥം:अनेक वर्ष, अनेक वर्ष, अनेक सहस्र वर्ष, अनेक करोड़ और लाखों वर्ष! हे नीलमणि-वर्ण, दृढ़ कंधों वाले प्रभु, जिन्होंने मल्लों (चाणूर-मुष्टिक) को परास्त किया — आपके सुंदर रक्त-चरणों पर सदा मंगल और रक्षा हो।

திருப்பல்லாண்டு പാരായണ വിധി
Sit before an image of Lord Vishnu or Krishna, light a lamp and recite the Thiruppallandu first, before other hymns, as a blessing wished upon the Lord. It is also sung at the very end of a recitation of the Divya Prabandham. Chant with the loving, protective mood of a parent blessing a beloved child — the bhava in which Periazhwar himself sang.
