வேல் வகுப்பு तमिल सन्त-कवि अरुणगிरிनाथர द्वारा रचित प्रसिद्ध स्तुति है जो पूर्णतः भगवान मुरुगन के दिव्य वेल (भाला) की महिमा गाती है। विशेष 'वगुप्पु' छन्द में रचित इसके श्लोक वेल के सौन्दर्य एवं शक्ति के अनेक बिम्ब प्रस्तुत करते हैं — इसे वल्ली के मोहक नेत्रों के समान बताते हैं, देवों को मुक्त करने वाला वरदान कहते हैं, तथा क्रौञ्च पर्वत के भेदन का स्मरण कराते हैं। इसके सोलह श्लोक 'वेल माறल' के रूप में पुनर्व्यवस्थित कर रक्षा-माला के रूप में भी पढ़े जाते हैं, जो साहस, विजय एवं अनिष्ट-निवारण हेतु जपी जाती है।

The Vel Vaguppu is part of the Thiruvaguppu of Arunagirinathar, the great Tamil saint-poet and devotee of Lord Murugan. Composed in a distinctive measured 'vaguppu' cadence, it is wholly devoted to the Vel — the divine lance that Parvati gave to Murugan and with which he slew Surapadma, Taraka and Krauncha and freed the captive gods. Each verse 'arranges' (vaguppu) fresh praises of the Vel, comparing it to the eyes of Valli and hailing it as the boon that broke the bonds of the devas and clove the mountains. Its verses, rearranged by Vallimalai Sri Sachchidananda Swamigal as the 'Vel Maaral', are recited as a famous protective garland to this day.

Devotees hold the Vel Maaral / Vel Vaguppu to be a 'mani-mantra-aushadha' — at once gem, mantra and medicine — and believe that one who recites it with faith is shielded by the very Vel of Murugan, before which fear, disease, enemies and evil flee as the demons once fled and the Krauncha mountain itself was riven.

अर्थ:(1) वेल (मुरुगन का दिव्य भाला) उस नन्ही वேடर-कन्या (वल्ली) के नेत्रों के समान ही है — जो पूर्ण वक्ष एवं क्षीण कटि वाली, उज्ज्वल मुस्कान, श्याम केश एवं रक्तिम अधर वाली है।

अर्थ:(2) वेल वह वरदान है जो (इन्द्र के) चरणों में जड़ी बेड़ियों को तोड़ देता है (और देवों को मुक्त करता है) — जिसके आगे ताड़-समान सूँड एवं चौड़े मदस्रावी कुम्भ वाला श्वेत दिव्य गज (ऐरावत) भी झुक जाता है।

अर्थ:(3) वेल वही है, जो परिपक्व अमृत-तुल्य तमिऴ के पीठ (संगम-फलक) पर बैठे एक कवि के गान से द्रवित होकर, पर्वत की गुफा को विदीर्ण कर मार्ग बना देता है — (जैसे उसने क्रौञ्च पर्वत को चीरा था)।

Many devotees recite the rearranged 'Vel Maaral' as a parayanam (continuous recitation) for protection, ending with salutations to the Vel — 'Vetri Vel! Veera Vel!'
