Meaning

This radiant verse is from the Shakradi Stuti (the hymn sung by Indra and the gods) in the fourth chapter of the Durga Saptashati, after the slaying of Mahishasura. It declares that the Goddess is the very fortune (Shri) dwelling in good homes and the wisdom in discerning hearts, while she withdraws as ill-fortune from the wicked — affirming that prosperity, intelligence, faith and modesty are all forms of the one Devi. It ends with the prayer 'protect the universe, O Devi.'

Origin & Story

Durga Saptashati Chapter 4 · Sage Markandeya (Rishi Markandeya) · Ancient (c. 400–600 CE, Markandeya Purana)

After the Goddess Durga vanquished Mahishasura at the end of Chapter 3, Indra and the host of gods offered the Shakradi Stuti in Chapter 4 of the Devi Mahatmya. In this verse they recognise the Devi as Shri herself in the homes of the good, as discrimination in the wise, and as faith and modesty in the noble — extolling her as the inner power behind every virtue and all good fortune.

As told in scripture

Tradition holds that households where this verse of the Shakradi Stuti is recited with sincerity during Navaratri are blessed by Lakshmi's presence, with want and misfortune (Alakshmi) departing as the Goddess takes up residence as the family's fortune.
