Goswami Tulsidas was a great devotee of Hanuman and is traditionally connected with the founding of the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple at Varanasi, where Hanuman is worshipped as the 'reliever of troubles'. This bhajan, sung in that devotional spirit, addresses Hanuman by his epithet Sankat Mochan and recounts the heroic acts from the Ramayana — the ocean-leap, the search for Sita, the burning of Lanka, the slaying of Ahiravana in the netherworld, and the bringing of the Sanjivani herb — concluding with the devotee's plea that Hanuman, ever Rama's servant, dwell in his heart and banish all fear.

अर्थ:'संकट मोचन' ही आपका नाम है, हे केसरीनंदन, हे बल के भंडार, हे श्रीरघुनाथ के प्यारे!
भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै, जब हनुमंत नाम सुनावै। कोटि कुटिल ग्रह दूर सिधावै, हे केसरी नंदन बल आगर॥

अर्थ:जब कोई हनुमान जी का नाम सुनाता है, तब भूत-पिशाच निकट नहीं आते और करोड़ों कुटिल ग्रह दूर भाग जाते हैं, हे बलवान् केसरीनंदन!
लाँघि गयो शत योजन सागर, मध्य पैठि कीन्हों रखवारो। सीता मात की सुधि जब लाये, हे रघुनाथ प्यारो॥

अर्थ:आप सौ योजन का सागर लाँघ गए, (लंका के) मध्य में प्रवेश कर रक्षा की, और जब आप माता सीता की सुधि ले आए, हे रघुनाथ के प्यारे!
लंका जारि कीन्ह उजियारो, अहिरावन कहँ मारन हारो। लखन शक्ति जब लागी उर में, संजीवन बूटी लै आयो॥

अर्थ:आपने लंका जलाकर उसे प्रकाशित कर दिया, और अहिरावण के संहारक हैं; जब लक्ष्मण के हृदय में शक्ति लगी, तब आप संजीवनी बूटी ले आए।
भय भंजन दुख दूर करन को, राम भक्त बल धाम तिहारो। तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरो, कीजै नाथ हृदय बसेरो॥

It may be sung once or repeated eleven times, especially when facing fear, illness, obstacles or affliction, while remembering Hanuman's mighty deeds and praying for his protection.
