सन्तोषी माता चालीसा

Verse 1
बन्दौं सन्तोषी चरण रिद्धि-सिद्धि दातार।
ध्यान धरत ही होत नर दुःख सागर से पार॥
Bandaum santoshi charana riddhi-siddhi datara
Dhyana dharata hi hota nara duhkha sagara se para
I bow at the feet of Santoshi Mata, giver of prosperity and perfection; merely meditating on her, one crosses the ocean of sorrow.
Verse 2
भक्तों को संतोष दे संतोषी तव नाम।
कृपा करहु जगदम्ब अब आया तेरे धाम॥
Bhaktom ko samtosha de samtoshi tava nama
Kripa karahu jagadamba aba aya tere dhama
Grant contentment to your devotees, O Santoshi, whose very name is solace; show your grace, O Mother of the world — I have come to your abode.
Verse 3
जय सन्तोषी मात अनुपम।
शांति दायिनी रूप मनोरम॥
Jaya santoshi mata anupama
Shamti dayini rupa manorama
Victory to Mother Santoshi, peerless one, of peace-giving and enchanting form.
Verse 4
सुन्दर वरण चतुर्भुज रूप।
वेश मनोहर ललित अनुपा॥
Sundara varana chaturbhuja rupa
Vesha manohara lalita anupa
Of fair complexion and four-armed form, of charming dress, graceful and unmatched.
Verse 5
श्वेताम्बर रूप मनहारी।
माँ तुम्हारी छवि जग से न्यारी॥
Shvetambara rupa manahari
Man tumhari chhavi jaga se nyari
Robed in white, your form steals the heart; your image, O Mother, is unlike any in the world.
Verse 6
दिव्य स्वरूपा आयत लोचन।
दर्शन से हो संकटमोचन॥
Divya svarupa ayata lochana
Darshana se ho samkatamochana
Of divine form and wide eyes — your mere sight dispels every distress.
Verse 7
जय गणेश की सुता भवानी।
रिद्धि- सिद्धि की पुत्री ज्ञानी॥
Jaya ganesha ki suta bhavani
Riddhi- siddhi ki putri jnani
Victory, O daughter of Ganesha, O Bhavani; wise daughter of Riddhi and Siddhi.
Verse 8
अगम अगोचर तुम्हरी माया।
सब पर करो कृपा की छाया॥
Agama agochara tumhari maya
Saba para karo kripa ki chhaya
Unfathomable and unseen is your power (Maya); cast the shade of your grace upon all.
Verse 9
नाम अनेक तुम्हारे माता।
अखिल विश्व है तुमको ध्याता॥
Nama aneka tumhare mata
Akhila vishva hai tumako dhyata
Many are your names, O Mother; the whole universe meditates upon you.
Verse 10
तुमने रूप अनेकों धारे।
को कहि सके चरित्र तुम्हारे॥
Tumane rupa anekom dhare
Ko kahi sake charitra tumhare
You have assumed countless forms — who can tell of all your deeds?
Verse 11
धाम अनेक कहाँ तक कहिये।
सुमिरन तब करके सुख लहिये॥
Dhama aneka kahan taka kahiye
Sumirana taba karake sukha lahiye
How many of your abodes can one name? Remembering you, one gains happiness.
Verse 12
विन्ध्याचल में विन्ध्यवासिनी।
कोटेश्वर सरस्वती सुहासिनी॥
Vindhyachala mem vindhyavasini
Koteshvara sarasvati suhasini
In the Vindhya hills you are Vindhyavasini; at Koteshwar, the fair-smiling Saraswati.
Verse 13
कलकत्ते में तू ही काली।
दुष्ट नाशिनी महाकराली॥
Kalakatte mem tu hi kali
Dushta nashini mahakarali
In Kolkata you yourself are Kali, the destroyer of the wicked, the greatly fearsome one.
Verse 14
सम्बल पुर बहुचरा कहाती।
भक्तजनों का दुख मिटाती॥
Sambala pura bahuchara kahati
Bhaktajanom ka dukha mitati
At Sambalpur you are called Bahuchara, wiping away the sorrows of devotees.
Verse 15
ज्वाला जी में ज्वाला देवी।
पूजत नित्य भक्त जन सेवी॥
Jvala ji mem jvala devi
Pujata nitya bhakta jana sevi
At Jwala Ji you are the Goddess of Flame, ever worshipped by faithful devotees.
Verse 16
नगर बम्बई की महारानी।
महा लक्ष्मी तुम कल्याणी॥
Nagara bambai ki maharani
Maha lakshmi tuma kalyani
You are the great queen of the city of Bombay, the auspicious Mahalakshmi.
Verse 17
मदुरा में मीनाक्षी तुम हो।
सुख दुख सबकी साक्षी तुम हो॥
Madura mem minakshi tuma ho
Sukha dukha sabaki sakshi tuma ho
At Madurai you are Meenakshi; you are the witness of everyone's joys and sorrows.
Verse 18
राजनगर में तुम जगदम्बे।
बनी भद्रकाली तुम अम्बे॥
Rajanagara mem tuma jagadambe
Bani bhadrakali tuma ambe
At Rajnagar you are Jagadamba; you became Bhadrakali, O Mother Amba.
Verse 19
पावागढ़ में दुर्गा माता।
अखिल विश्व तेरा यश गाता॥
Pavagadha़ mem durga mata
Akhila vishva tera yasha gata
At Pavagadh you are Durga Mata; the whole world sings your glory.
Verse 20
काशीपुराधीश्वरी माता।
अन्नपूर्णा नाम सुहाता॥
Kashipuradhishvari mata
Annapurna nama suhata
As ruler of Kashi you are Mother Annapurna, whose name is ever sweet.
Verse 21
सर्वानंद करो कल्याणी।
तुम्हीं शारदा अमृतवाणी॥
Sarvanamda karo kalyani
Tumhim sharada amritavani
Bestow welfare on all, O auspicious one; you yourself are Sharada of nectar-speech.
Verse 22
तुम्हरी महिमा जल में थल में।
दुःख दारिद्र सब मेटो पल में॥
Tumhari mahima jala mem thala mem
Duhkha daridra saba meto pala mem
Your glory pervades the waters and the land; in an instant you wipe away all sorrow and poverty.
Verse 23
जेते ऋषि और मुनीशा।
नारद देव और देवेशा।
Jete rishi aura munisha
Narada deva aura devesha
However many sages and great munis there are, and Narada and the lords of gods —
Verse 24
इस जगती के नर और नारी।
ध्यान धरत हैं मात तुम्हारी॥
Isa jagati ke nara aura nari
Dhyana dharata haim mata tumhari
— all the men and women of this world meditate upon you, O Mother.
Verse 25
जापर कृपा तुम्हारी होती।
वह पाता भक्ति का मोती॥
Japara kripa tumhari hoti
Vaha pata bhakti ka moti
Upon whomever your grace descends, that one obtains the pearl of devotion.
Verse 26
दुःख दारिद्र संकट मिट जाता।
ध्यान तुम्हारा जो जन ध्याता॥
Duhkha daridra samkata mita jata
Dhyana tumhara jo jana dhyata
Sorrow, poverty and calamity vanish for the one who meditates upon you.
Verse 27
जो जन तुम्हरी महिमा गावै।
ध्यान तुम्हारा कर सुख पावै॥
Jo jana tumhari mahima gavai
Dhyana tumhara kara sukha pavai
Whoever sings your glory and meditates on you finds happiness.
Verse 28
जो मन राखे शुद्ध भावना।
ताकी पूरण करो कामना॥
Jo mana rakhe shuddha bhavana
Taki purana karo kamana
Whoever keeps a pure heart — their every wish you fulfil.
Verse 29
कुमति निवारि सुमति की दात्री।
जयति जयति माता जगधात्री॥
Kumati nivari sumati ki datri
Jayati jayati mata jagadhatri
Remover of dull wit, bestower of good understanding — victory, victory, O Mother, sustainer of the world!
Verse 30
शुक्रवार का दिवस सुहावन।
जो व्रत करे तुम्हारा पावन॥
Shukravara ka divasa suhavana
Jo vrata kare tumhara pavana
Pleasant is the day of Friday; whoever keeps your holy fast,
Verse 31
गुड़ छोले का भोग लगावै।
कथा तुम्हारी सुने सुनावे॥
Guda़ chhole ka bhoga lagavai
Katha tumhari sune sunave
— offers jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana), and hears and tells your story,
Verse 32
विधिवत पूजा करे तुम्हारी।
फिर प्रसाद पावे शुभकारी॥
Vidhivata puja kare tumhari
Phira prasada pave shubhakari
— and worships you with due rites, then receives your blessed prasad.
Verse 33
शक्ति- सामरथ हो जो धनको।
दान- दक्षिणा दे विप्रन को॥
Shakti- samaratha ho jo dhanako
Dana- dakshina de viprana ko
Those of means who give charity and dakshina to the brahmins,
Verse 34
वे जगती के नर औ नारी।
मनवांछित फल पावें भारी॥
Ve jagati ke nara au nari
Manavamchhita phala pavem bhari
— those men and women of the world obtain abundantly their heart's desire.
Verse 35
जो जन शरण तुम्हारी जावे।
सो निश्चय भव से तर जावे॥
Jo jana sharana tumhari jave
So nishchaya bhava se tara jave
Whoever takes refuge in you surely crosses over the ocean of existence.
Verse 36
तुम्हरो ध्यान कुमारी ध्यावे।
निश्चय मनवांछित वर पावै॥
Tumharo dhyana kumari dhyave
Nishchaya manavamchhita vara pavai
The maiden who meditates on you certainly attains the husband she desires.
Verse 37
सधवा पूजा करे तुम्हारी।
अमर सुहागिन हो वह नारी॥
Sadhava puja kare tumhari
Amara suhagina ho vaha nari
The married woman who worships you becomes an ever-blessed, undying suhagin (happily wed).
Verse 38
विधवा धर के ध्यान तुम्हारा।
भवसागर से उतरे पारा॥
Vidhava dhara ke dhyana tumhara
Bhavasagara se utare para
The widow who holds your meditation crosses over the ocean of existence.
Verse 39
जयति जयति जय संकट हरणी।
विघ्न विनाशन मंगल करनी॥
Jayati jayati jaya samkata harani
Vighna vinashana mamgala karani
Victory, victory, victory, O remover of calamity, destroyer of obstacles, doer of good!
Verse 40
हम पर संकट है अति भारी।
वेगि खबर लो मात हमारी॥
Hama para samkata hai ati bhari
Vegi khabara lo mata hamari
A great calamity is upon us — come swiftly, O Mother, and look upon us.
Verse 41
संतोषी माँ के सदा बंदहूँ पग निश वास।
पूर्ण मनोरथ हो सकल मात हरौ भव त्रास॥
Samtoshi man ke sada bamdahun paga nisha vasa
Purna manoratha ho sakala mata harau bhava trasa
I ever bow at Santoshi Mother's feet, dwelling in her day and night; may all desires be fulfilled — O Mother, remove the fear of existence.
