Instructions

On Friday, after bathing, sit before an image of Santoshi Mata and offer gud (jaggery) and chana (roasted chickpeas). Light a lamp, recite the opening doha and the chaupais with devotion, and listen to or tell the vrat katha. Avoid sour foods on the fast day. Conclude with aarti and distribute the prasad. The vrat is traditionally observed for 16 Fridays.

Spiritual Significance

Devotees of Santoshi Mata tell of countless wishes fulfilled through her simple sixteen-Friday vrat — homes restored to harmony, marriages blessed, and burdens of poverty lifted — for those who keep her fast with a pure, contented heart and offer only gud and chana. The Chalisa's promise is gentle and sure: take her refuge, and cross safely over the ocean of existence.

Origin & History

Source: Traditional Hindi devotional hymn

Author: Traditional

Santoshi Mata, the Goddess of Contentment, rose to immense popularity across North India in the 20th century, especially after the 1975 film 'Jai Santoshi Maa'. Worshipped as the daughter of Ganesha and Riddhi-Siddhi, she is beloved for the simple Friday vrat — an offering of jaggery and chickpeas and a heart free of sourness and discontent. This Chalisa garlands her many forms across India's shrines and promises peace to all who take her refuge.
