Tyagaraja, the great devotee of Lord Rama, composed five 'gem' kritis (Pancharatna), each a garland of charanams in a single raga. 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu' in raga Sri is the last of the five. In it the saint, instead of praising himself or even the Lord alone, offers boundless salutations to all the great souls who have beheld Rama in their hearts — the sages, devotees and singers across the ages. It closes with his signature, naming himself the friend of the boon-giving Lord.

It is told that Lord Rama Himself appeared to Tyagaraja and that the saint's kritis flowed by direct grace; each year at his Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru, hundreds of musicians gather on the banks of the Kaveri to sing the five Pancharatna kritis in unison, and devotees say the very air fills with the presence of Rama as 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu' rises.

பொருள்:कितने, कितने अगणित हैं वे महान, श्रेष्ठ आत्माएँ — उन सबको मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ! (यह त्यागराज की सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध पंचरत्न कृति की ध्रुवपंक्ति है — उन सबको नमन जो प्रभु से प्रेम करते और उनका दर्शन करते हैं।)

பொருள்:कितने हैं वे धन्य और श्रेष्ठ जन, जो मन्मथ से भी अधिक लावण्य से सुशोभित हैं और साम-वेद के गान में रमते हैं!

பொருள்:कितने हैं वे, जिन्होंने इंद्रियों के वन में जंगली पशु-सा भटकते मन को स्थिर कर, भीतर दिव्य रूप का स्पष्ट दर्शन किया — उन सबको प्रणाम!

பொருள்:कितने हैं वे करोड़ों भक्त, जिनके कंठ में भगवान हरि के गुण-रूपी मणियों की मालाएँ शोभित हैं — जो ज्ञान, मैत्री और करुणा से, अपनी अमृतमयी दृष्टि से समस्त जगत् की रक्षा करते हैं!

Sing or recite before an image of Lord Rama with devotion, dwelling on its meaning — homage to all the great souls who have realised the Lord. If sung, it is set in raga Sri and Adi tala; if recited, chant the refrain 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu, andariki vandanamulu' as a salutation. It is traditionally sung as part of the five Pancharatna kritis in sequence.

It is the fifth and most famous of the five Pancharatna ('five gems') kritis composed by Saint Tyagaraja in praise of Lord Rama, set in raga Sri. Its title means 'How many great noble souls (there are)', and it is a salutation to all the realised devotees and sages who behold the Lord.

Saint Tyagaraja (1767-1847) of Thiruvaiyaru was one of the 'Trinity' of Carnatic music and one of the greatest devotee-composers of Lord Rama. He composed thousands of kritis in Telugu and Sanskrit, expressing total surrender to Rama; his five Pancharatna kritis are regarded as the very pinnacle of the tradition.

The Pancharatna ('five gems') are a set of five grand kritis by Tyagaraja, each in a different raga, sung together by assembled musicians at the annual Tyagaraja Aradhana festival in Thiruvaiyaru. 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu' is the fifth and most celebrated of these five.

In deep humility, Tyagaraja chose to honour all the great souls — sages, bhaktas and singers — who have truly realised and adored Lord Rama. By bowing to them, he expresses that the surest path to God is to revere His devotees, making the kriti a timeless lesson in humility and devotion.
