After the demon-king Shumbha's first messenger failed to win over the Goddess, Shumbha sent the daitya Dhumralochana with sixty thousand asuras to bring her by force. The Goddess, seated on the Himalaya, calmly told him she could not stop him from trying. When Dhumralochana charged, Ambika reduced him to ashes with a single hunkara, and her lion destroyed his army.

Devotees hold that this verse demonstrates how the Mother can dissolve an overwhelming threat in an instant; those who chant it in moments of intimidation report a sudden, unexpected collapse of the forces arrayed against them, as Dhumralochana's army crumbled before the Devi's lion.

ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਪੰਗਤੀ ਜਾਂ ▶ ਬਟਨ ਨੂੰ ਛੂਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣੋ
ਦੇਵ੍ਯੁਵਾਚ ਦੈਤ੍ਯੇਸ਼੍ਵਰੇਣ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਤੋ ਬਲਵਾਨ੍ਬਲਸਂਵ੍ਰਿਤਃ । ਬਲਾਨ੍ਨਯਸਿ ਮਾਮੇਵਂ ਤਤਃ ਕਿਂ ਤੇ ਕਰੋਮ੍ਯਹਮ੍ ॥
devyuvāca daityeśvareṇa prahito balavānbalasaṃvṛtaḥ balānnayasi māmevaṃ tataḥ kiṃ te karomyaham
ਅਰਥ:देवी बोलीं — 'तुम दैत्येश्वर द्वारा भेजे गए हो, बलवान् हो और सेना से घिरे हो; यदि तुम इस प्रकार मुझे बलपूर्वक ले जाओगे — तो मैं तुम्हारा क्या कर सकती हूँ?' ऋषि बोले — इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर असुर धूम्रलोचन उन पर झपटा; और तब अम्बिका ने हुँकार मात्र से उसे भस्म कर दिया।
