देवी माहात्म्य (दुर्गा सप्तशती) के बारहवें अध्याय के ये श्लोक देवी के माहात्म्य के पाठ का अद्भुत फल प्रकट करते हैं। पुष्प, दीप, धूप, ब्राह्मण-भोजन, होम और दानों सहित दिन-रात की विस्तृत पूजा से वर्ष भर में जो प्रीति अर्जित होती है, वह उनके माहात्म्य के एक बार पाठ या श्रवण से ही प्राप्त हो जाती है। इसका श्रवण पापों को हरता और आरोग्य देता है; उनके प्राकट्यों का कीर्तन दुष्ट भूतों से रक्षा करता है; और उनके युद्ध-चरित्र का श्रवण मनुष्यों को समस्त शत्रु-भय से मुक्त करता है।

The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons and, in Chapter 12, the phalashruti of her worship. In these verses the Goddess reveals that the favour earned by a whole year of elaborate worship — offerings, lamps, incense, feeding of brahmanas, oblations and gifts day and night — is won simply by reciting or hearing her Mahatmya once. She declares that hearing it removes sins and grants health, that reciting her manifestations protects from evil beings, and that hearing her battle-exploits frees one from all fear of enemies — exalting the recitation of her glory as the supreme and most accessible worship.

Because the Goddess equates a single recitation of her Mahatmya with a year's elaborate worship, devotees through the ages have turned to the Durga Saptashati in times of sickness and fear. Many recount healing of illness, protection from malign influences, and the lifting of dread after hearing these verses recited with faith during Navaratri.

अर्थ:यह सम्पूर्ण माहात्म्य मेरी सन्निधि कराने वाला है। और पशु, पुष्प, अर्घ्य, धूप, तथा उत्तम गन्ध और दीपों से, ब्राह्मणों के भोजन, होम और प्रोक्षण-कर्मों से, दिन-रात, और अन्य अनेक भोग व दानों से, वर्ष भर में —
विप्राणां भोजनैर्होमैः प्रोक्षणीयैरहर्निशम् । अन्यैश्च विविधैर्भोगैः प्रदानैर्वत्सरेण या ॥

अर्थ:मेरी जो प्रीति वर्ष भर में की जाती है, वह इस माहात्म्य के एक बार उच्चारण या श्रवण से ही प्राप्त हो जाती है। इसका श्रवण पापों को हरता है और आरोग्य प्रदान करता है।
प्रीतिर्मे क्रियते सास्मिन् सकृदुच्चरिते श्रुते । श्रुतं हरति पापानि तथारोग्यं प्रयच्छति ॥
