देवी माहात्म्य (दुर्गा सप्तशती) के बारहवें अध्याय के ये समापन श्लोक जगन्माता के नित्य स्वरूप को प्रकट करते हैं। नित्या होने पर भी वे जगत् की रक्षा के लिए बार-बार प्रकट होती हैं; वे विश्व को मोहित भी करती हैं और प्रकट भी करती हैं, प्रार्थना करने वालों को ज्ञान और प्रसन्न होने पर समृद्धि देती हैं। वे महाकाली रूप में सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड में व्याप्त हैं, समय पर सृष्टि, स्थिति और संहार हैं, और समृद्धि में लक्ष्मी एवं विनाश में अलक्ष्मी रूप में प्रकट होती हैं। पुष्प-धूप से पूजित होने पर वे धन, संतान, धर्म में बुद्धि और शुभ गति प्रदान करती हैं।
उत्पत्ति और कथा

The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons and, in Chapter 12, the phalashruti of her worship. After Chandika vanishes from the sight of the gods, the sage Medhas brings the chapter to a close by revealing her eternal nature to King Suratha. Though ever-existing, she takes form again and again to protect the world; she is Mahakali pervading the cosmos, creation, sustenance and dissolution in their season, Lakshmi in prosperity and Alakshmi in ruin — and, worshipped with devotion, the bestower of wealth, offspring, a dharmic mind and an auspicious destiny.

Tradition holds that because these verses name the Goddess as the giver of wealth, children, wisdom and an auspicious destiny, their worshipful recitation during Navaratri brings abundance and well-being to the whole household. evaṃ bhagavatī devī sā nityāpi punaḥ punaḥ sambhūya kurute bhūpa jagataḥ paripālanam
अर्थ:इस प्रकार वह भगवती देवी नित्या होने पर भी बार-बार प्रकट होकर जगत् का पालन करती हैं, हे राजन्।
तयैतन्मोह्यते विश्वं सैव विश्वं प्रसूयते । सा याचिता च विज्ञानं तुष्टा ऋद्धिं प्रयच्छति ॥
tayaitanmohyate viśvaṃ saiva viśvaṃ prasūyate sā yācitā ca vijñānaṃ tuṣṭā ṛddhiṃ prayacchati
अर्थ:उन्हीं से यह विश्व मोहित होता है; वही विश्व को प्रकट करती हैं। प्रार्थना करने पर वे विज्ञान देती हैं, और प्रसन्न होने पर समृद्धि प्रदान करती हैं।
व्याप्तं तयैतत्सकलं ब्रह्माण्डं मनुजेश्वर । महादेव्या महाकाली महामारीस्वरूपया ॥
vyāptaṃ tayaitatsakalaṃ brahmāṇḍaṃ manujeśvara mahādevyā mahākālī mahāmārīsvarūpayā
अर्थ:हे मनुजेश्वर! महाकाली और महामारी-स्वरूपा उन महादेवी से ही यह समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड व्याप्त है।
सैव काले महामारी सैव सृष्टिर्भवत्यजा । स्थितिं करोति भूतानां सैव काले सनातनी ॥
saiva kāle mahāmārī saiva sṛṣṭirbhavatyajā sthitiṃ karoti bhūtānāṃ saiva kāle sanātanī
अर्थ:वही समय आने पर महामारी हैं, वही अजन्मा सृष्टि हैं; और वही सनातनी समय पर प्राणियों की स्थिति (पालन) करती हैं।
भवकाले नृणां सैव लक्ष्मीर्वृद्धिप्रदा गृहे । सैवाभावे तथालक्ष्मीर्विनाशायोपजायते ॥
bhavakāle nṛṇāṃ saiva lakṣmīrvṛddhipradā gṛhe saivābhāve tathālakṣmīrvināśāyopajāyate
अर्थ:अभ्युदय के समय वे मनुष्यों के घर में वृद्धि देने वाली लक्ष्मी हैं; और अभाव (दुर्भाग्य) के समय वे ही अलक्ष्मी होकर विनाश के लिए प्रकट होती हैं।
स्तुता सम्पूजिता पुष्पैर्गन्धधूपादिभिस्तथा । ददाति वित्तं पुत्रांश्च मतिं धर्मे गतिं शुभाम् ॥
stutā sampūjitā puṣpairgandhadhūpādibhistathā dadāti vittaṃ putrāṃśca matiṃ dharme gatiṃ śubhām
अर्थ:पुष्प, गन्ध, धूप आदि से स्तुति और पूजन किए जाने पर वे धन और पुत्र, धर्म में बुद्धि तथा शुभ गति प्रदान करती हैं।
