✦ Meaning
This is the principal dhyana (meditation verse) recited before the Lalita Sahasranama, painting the form of the supreme Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari. She is visualised as vermilion-red, three-eyed, crowned with rubies and the crescent moon, smiling gently, holding a jewelled cup of nectar and a red lotus. Meditating on this radiant form prepares the heart to receive the thousand names of the Divine Mother.
Origin & Story
Dhyana verse of the Lalita Sahasranama, Brahmanda Purana (Lalitopakhyana) · Traditional (Vagdevatas / Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana) · Ancient (Puranic)
The Lalita Sahasranama, revealed in the Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana, was composed by the eight Vagdevatas at the command of the Goddess Lalita. It is prefaced by several dhyana verses that establish the worshipper's vision of the Mother; 'Sindhuraruna vigraham' is the foremost among them, describing her vermilion radiance and divine attributes before the thousand names begin.
✦ As told in scripture
Devotees in the Sri Vidya tradition hold that those who hold this vermilion form of the Mother steadily in meditation before chanting her names experience an overflowing of Sri (auspiciousness) — beauty, eloquence and prosperity — as the Goddess is said to dwell wherever her form is lovingly contemplated.
