Among the thousands of sankirtanas Annamayya sang for Lord Venkateswara are tender songs on the Lord's avataras. In this famous lali-like kirtana he gazes at baby Krishna in Yashoda's courtyard and, jeweller-like, sets him as each of the nine gems in turn — ending with the indranila, the blue sapphire, who is none other than the Lord of Venkatadri. The song was preserved on the copper plates of the Tirumala temple and is today one of the most cherished pieces of the Annamacharya corpus.

The Tallapaka copper plates lay forgotten in a sealed cellar of the Tirumala temple for over four centuries; when they were rediscovered in 1922, songs like 'Muddugare Yashoda' rose again as if the Lord had kept his poet's lullabies safe in his own treasury. Mothers who sing it as a cradle song believe the child Krishna himself watches over their little ones.

muddugārē yaśōda muṅgiṭi mutyamu vīḍu । tiddarāni mahimala dēvakī sutuḍu ॥

பொருள்:यशोदा के आँगन का यह दुलारा, लावण्य से दमकता बालक एक अनमोल मोती है; यह देवकी का पुत्र है, जिसकी महिमाएँ ऐसी पूर्ण हैं कि उनमें कोई सुधार संभव ही नहीं।

சுலோகம் 2

அந்த நிந்த கொல்லெதல அரசேதி மாணிக்யமு । பந்த மாடே கம்ஸுநி பாலி வஜ்ரமு । காந்துல மூடு லோகால கருட பச்ச பூஸ । செந்தல மாலோ நுந்ந சிந்நி க்ரு'ஷ்ணுடு ॥

anta ninta golletala aracēti māṇikyamu । panta māḍē kaṃsuni pāli vajramu । kāntula mūḍu lōkāla garuḍa pacca būsa । centala mālō nunna cinni kṛṣṇuḍu ॥

பொருள்:आस-पास की गोपियों के लिए वह उनकी हथेली में दमकता माणिक्य है; हठ ठाने कंस के लिए भाग्य का अटूट वज्र (हीरा)। वह तीनों लोकों को कांति से भरनेवाला पन्ना है — नन्हा कृष्ण, जो हमारे ही बीच बसता है।

ரதிகேலி ருக்மிணிகி ரங்கு மோவி பகடமு । மிதி கோவர்தநபு கோமேதிகமு । ஸதமை ஶங்க சக்ரால ஸந்துல வைடூர்யமு । கதியை மம்மு காசேடி கமலாக்ஷுடு ॥

ratikēli rukmiṇiki raṅgu mōvi pagaḍamu । miti gōvardhanapu gōmēdhikamu । satamai śaṅkha cakrāla sandula vaiḍūryamu । gatiyai mammu gācēṭi kamalākṣuḍu ॥

பொருள்:प्रेम-क्रीड़ा में वह रुक्मिणी के अधरों का चमकीला मूँगा है; अपार गोवर्धन पर्वत के रूप में गोमेद रत्न। शंख और चक्र के बीच सदा जगमगाता वैडूर्य (लहसुनिया) है — कमलनयन प्रभु, जो हमारी गति और हमारे रखवाले हैं।

காலிங்குநி தலலபை கப்பிந புஷ்யராகமு । யேலேடி ஶ்ரீ வேங்கடாத்ரி யிந்த்ரநீலமு । பால ஜலநிதி லோந பாயநி திவ்ய ரத்நமு । பாலுநிவலெ திரிகீ பத்ம நாபுடு ॥

kāliṅguni talalapai gappina puṣyarāgamu । yēlēṭi śrī vēṅkaṭādri yindranīlamu । pāla jalanidhi lōna bāyani divya ratnamu । bālunivale dirigī badma nābhuḍu ॥

பொருள்:वह कालिय नाग के फणों पर बिछा पुखराज है, और श्री वेंकटाद्रि पर राज करता इंद्रनील (नीलम)। वह क्षीरसागर से कभी अलग न होनेवाला दिव्य रत्न है — स्वयं पद्मनाभ, जो एक नन्हे बालक की तरह घूमता फिरता है।

திசைFacing the deity of Krishna or Venkateswara

Sing softly and sweetly, as a mother would to the divine child — it is a jola/lali (lullaby-like) sankirtana. Dwell on each gem-image of Krishna as you sing, from the pearl of Yashoda's courtyard to the sapphire of Venkatadri. Suitable for cradle ceremonies, Janmashtami nights and daily evening devotion.

'Muddugare' means 'dripping with sweetness/charm'. The opening line says: this darling child in Yashoda's front courtyard is a pearl — the son of Devaki, of unalterable glories.

Each charanam likens the child Krishna to gems of the navaratna: pearl, ruby, diamond, emerald, coral, hessonite, cat's-eye, topaz and sapphire — the last being the Lord of Venkatadri, uniting Krishna with Venkateswara.

It was composed by Saint Annamacharya (1408-1503 CE), the Tallapaka poet of Tirumala. Today it is popularly rendered in raga Kurinji as a gentle, swaying lullaby.

For Annamayya, Venkateswara is the same supreme Vishnu who came as Krishna. In the last charanam the child of Vrindavana is revealed as the sapphire ruling Sri Venkatadri — the Lord of the seven hills.
