Ashtabhuja Ashtakam (eight verses on the Ashtabhuja Perumal of Kanchipuram) · Vedanta Desika (Venkatanatha) · 13th-14th century CE
Swami Vedanta Desika, who lived for much of his life in Kanchipuram, composed this Ashtakam as a prapatti to Ashtabhuja Perumal, the eight-armed form of Vishnu in the Ashtabhujakaram Divya Desam. Overcome by the Lord's beauty and grace, and likening himself to the helpless Gajendra dragged by the crocodile of sense-objects, he surrendered himself entirely into the Lord's protection in eight verses, praying not for liberation as an end in itself but for the bliss of perpetual service at the Lord's feet.

The Lord is said to have taken the rare eight-armed (ashtabhuja) form at Kanchipuram to guard a great sacrifice from disruption, driving away the obstructing forces with the weapons in His eight hands; devotees hold that He who thus protected the yajna, and who once flew to save Gajendra, likewise shields all who surrender to Him through this Ashtakam.

gajendrarakṣātvaritaṃ bhavantaṃ grāhairivāhaṃ viṣayairvikṛṣṭaḥ | apāravijñānadayānubhāvam āptaṃ satāmaṣṭabhujaṃ prapadye || 1 ||
Meaning:जैसे गजेन्द्र को ग्राह (मगर) ने खींचा था, वैसे ही मैं विषयों द्वारा खींचा जा रहा हूँ; गजेन्द्र की रक्षा हेतु शीघ्र दौड़ने वाले, सत्पुरुषों के आश्रय, अपार ज्ञान-दया-प्रभाव वाले उन अष्टभुज भगवान् की मैं शरण लेता हूँ।

Meaning:मैं केवल आपका शेष (अधीन) हूँ, स्वतन्त्र नहीं। जिन्होंने मुझे आपके चरणों की चाह दी, उन आपसे ही, असत् के समान होते हुए भी, अब मैं सत्ता (वास्तविक अस्तित्व) को प्राप्त हुआ हूँ — हे अष्टभुज-स्थान के स्वामी!

Meaning:आपके स्वरूप, रूप, अस्त्र, आभूषण आदि से मुझमें उत्पन्न आपके परत्व (श्रेष्ठता) का दुर्निवार भाव — उसे, भोग में सुलभता चाहते हुए, आप अपने शील आदि गुणों से मानो दूर कर देते हैं।

Meaning:हे नाथ! अन्य 'शरण' कहलाने वालों की शक्ति तथा अन्य फलों के सार को तौलकर, आपके दास्य के लिए जिन्होंने निःशंक होकर अपने को आप पर न्यस्त कर दिया है, उनका भार आप वहन करते हैं।
අභීතිහේතෝරනුවර්තනීයං නාථ ත්වදන්යං න විභාවයාමි . භයං කුතඃ ස්යාත් ත්වයි සානුකම්පේ රක්ෂා කුතඃ ස්යාත් ත්වයි ජාතරෝෂේ .. 5 ..
abhītihetoranuvartanīyaṃ nātha tvadanyaṃ na vibhāvayāmi | bhayaṃ kutaḥ syāt tvayi sānukampe rakṣā kutaḥ syāt tvayi jātaroṣe || 5 ||
Meaning:हे नाथ! अभय के लिए अनुसरणीय आपके अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य की मैं कल्पना भी नहीं करता। आप सानुकम्प हों तो भय कहाँ? और (कदाचित्) आप ही रुष्ट हों तो रक्षा कहाँ से हो?

Meaning:हे कमलासहाय (लक्ष्मीपति)! मैं केवल आप पर निर्भर हूँ, अतः आप स्वयं ही मेरी रक्षा कीजिए। आपके प्रवृत्त होने पर मेरे प्रयास से क्या प्रयोजन? और आपके न प्रवृत्त होने पर भी मेरे प्रयास से क्या?

Meaning:समाधि भंग होने पर और विघ्नों के आ पड़ने पर भी, शरण्यभूत आप जब कमर कसे (रक्षा को तत्पर) हैं, तब मैं अकिञ्चन एवं निर्लज्ज, हे नाथ, कठिन आरोहण तथा पतन — दोनों को सहन कर सकता हूँ।

Meaning:आपकी कृपा से अभीष्ट प्राप्त कर, हे लक्ष्मीसेव्य चरणकमल वाले! इस देह के पतन तक मुझे अपराध से दूर रखते हुए, अपने चरणकमलों में अन्तरंग कैंकर्य के रस से युक्त बनाइए।

Recall the story of Gajendra and the Lord's swift grace, then recite the eight verses with devotion, offering yourself into His protection as Swami Desika does. Dwell especially on the surrender of verses one, six and eight. Conclude by praying to be kept far from fault and to relish loving service at His lotus feet.
