When the Goddess had slain Shumbha and freed the three worlds, Indra and the gods sang the Narayani Stuti in gratitude. Amid its praises they declared that, pleased, she takes away every disease, and that those who take refuge in her know no calamity. These lines — together with the great refrains 'Sharanagata-dinarta-paritrana-parayane' and 'Sarva-mangala-mangalye' — became among the most recited prayers to the Mother for health, refuge and auspiciousness.

ਰੋਗਾਨਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਾਨਪਹਂਸਿ ਤੁਸ਼੍ਟਾ ਰੁਸ਼੍ਟਾ ਤੁ ਕਾਮਾਨ੍ ਸਕਲਾਨਭੀਸ਼੍ਟਾਨ੍ । ਤ੍ਵਾਮਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਾਨਾਂ ਨ ਵਿਪਨ੍ਨਰਾਣਾਂ ਤ੍ਵਾਮਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਾ ਹ੍ਯਾਸ਼੍ਰਯਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਨ੍ਤਿ ॥

ਅਰਥ:प्रसन्न होने पर आप समस्त रोगों का नाश करती हैं; पर रुष्ट होने पर (दुष्टों के) समस्त अभीष्ट कामनाओं का। जो आपकी शरण में आ गए, उन मनुष्यों पर कोई विपत्ति नहीं आती; बल्कि जो आपकी शरण में हैं, वे (औरों के लिए) आश्रय बन जाते हैं।

ਸ਼ਰਣਾਗਤਦੀਨਾਰ੍ਤਪਰਿਤ੍ਰਾਣਪਰਾਯਣੇ । ਸਰ੍ਵਸ੍ਯਾਰ੍ਤਿਹਰੇ ਦੇਵਿ ਨਾਰਾਯਣਿ ਨਮੋऽਸ੍ਤੁ ਤੇ ॥

ਅਰਥ:हे शरणागत, दीन और आर्त जनों की रक्षा में तत्पर! हे सबकी पीड़ा हरने वाली देवी! हे नारायणि! आपको नमस्कार है।

ਸਰ੍ਵਮਙ੍ਗਲਮਾਙ੍ਗਲ੍ਯੇ ਸ਼ਿਵੇ ਸਰ੍ਵਾਰ੍ਥਸਾਧਿਕੇ । ਸ਼ਰਣ੍ਯੇ ਤ੍ਰ੍ਯਮ੍ਬਕੇ ਗੌਰਿ ਨਾਰਾਯਣਿ ਨਮੋऽਸ੍ਤੁ ਤੇ ॥

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo'stu te

ਅਰਥ:हे समस्त मंगलों की मांगल्य-स्वरूपा! हे कल्याणी शिवे! हे समस्त प्रयोजनों को सिद्ध करने वाली! हे शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरी! हे नारायणि! आपको नमस्कार है।

Light a lamp before an image of Durga or Narayani and recite the verses with devotion after 'Om'. This verse is widely chanted as a prayer for health and recovery — for oneself or on behalf of someone who is ill. Recite it slowly, resting the mind on the promise 'rogan asheshan apahamsi tushta' (when pleased, you take away all diseases). Repeating it 11 or 21 times, or as part of a full Narayani Stuti during Navaratri, is a traditional practice for healing and protection.
