Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, a scholar of Kerala, took upon himself the paralysis of his guru. Advised to surrender to Guruvayurappan, he composed ten verses each day in praise of the Lord, drawing from the Bhagavatam. He began with these verses celebrating the presence of Brahman at Guruvayur. On completing the 1,034th verse, he beheld a vision of the Lord and was healed.

It is famously recounted that as Bhattathiri completed the final dashaka of the Narayaniyam, the Lord of Guruvayur granted him a direct vision and cured his crippling paralysis — and to this day devotees recite the work, beginning with 'Sandrananda-avabodhatmakam', praying for relief from disease and sorrow.

ਸਾਨ੍ਦ੍ਰਾਨਨ੍ਦਾਵਬੋਧਾਤ੍ਮਕਮਨੁਪਮਿਤਂ ਕਾਲਦੇਸ਼ਾਵਧਿਭ੍ਯਾਂ ਨਿਰ੍ਮੁਕ੍ਤਂ ਨਿਤ੍ਯਮੁਕ੍ਤਂ ਨਿਗਮਸ਼ਤਸਹਸ੍ਰੇਣ ਨਿਰ੍ਭਾਸ੍ਯਮਾਨਮ੍ । ਅਸ੍ਪਸ਼੍ਟਂ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼੍ਟਮਾਤ੍ਰੇ ਪੁਨਰੁਰੁਪੁਰੁਸ਼ਾਰ੍ਥਾਤ੍ਮਕਂ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮ ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਂ ਤਤ੍ਤਾਵਦ੍ਭਾਤਿ ਸਾਕ੍ਸ਼ਾਦ੍ਗੁਰੁਪਵਨਪੁਰੇ ਹਨ੍ਤ ਭਾਗ੍ਯਂ ਜਨਾਨਾਮ੍ ॥
Sāndrānandāvabodhātmakamanupamitaṁ kāladeśāvadhibhyāṁ Nirmuktaṁ nityamuktaṁ nigamaśatasahasreṇa nirbhāsyamānam | Aspaṣṭaṁ dṛṣṭamātre punarurupuruṣārthātmakaṁ brahma tattvaṁ Tattāvadbhāti sākṣādgurupavanapure hanta bhāgyaṁ janānām ||
ਅਰਥ:वह ब्रह्म-तत्त्व, जो सान्द्र आनन्द और शुद्ध बोध स्वरूप है, अनुपम है, काल और देश की सीमाओं से मुक्त है, नित्यमुक्त है, सहस्रों वेद-वाक्यों से प्रकाशित है — जो साधारण दृष्टि से अस्पष्ट किन्तु साक्षात् अनुभवगम्य है, तथा परम पुरुषार्थ का स्वरूप है — वही तत्त्व यहाँ गुरुवायुपुर में प्रत्यक्ष विराजमान है। अहो, यह जनों का कितना सौभाग्य है!
ਏਵਂ ਦੁਰ੍ਲਭ੍ਯਵਸ੍ਤੁਨ੍ਯਪਿ ਸੁਲਭਤਯਾ ਹਸ੍ਤਲਬ੍ਧੇ ਯਦਨ੍ਯਤ੍ ਤਨ੍ਵਾ ਵਾਚਾ ਧਿਯਾ ਵਾ ਭਜਤਿ ਬਤ ਜਨਃ ਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਦ੍ਰਤਾਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਦ੍ਰਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਃ । ਏਸ਼ੋऽਹਂ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮੂਰ੍ਤੇ ਤਵ ਚਰਣਯੁਗਂ ਦੇਵਪੂਜ੍ਯਂ ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯੇ ਹਨ੍ਤ ਵਾਸੁਦੇਵ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਪਯ ਦੁਰਿਤਂ ਦ੍ਰਾਗਯੋ ਮਾਮਮੁਂ ਤੇ ॥
Evaṁ durlabhyavastunyapi sulabhatayā hastalabdhe yadanyat Tanvā vācā dhiyā vā bhajati bata janaḥ kṣudratāṁ kṣudrabuddhiḥ | Eṣo'haṁ viśvamūrte tava caraṇayugaṁ devapūjyaṁ prapadye Hanta vāsudeva kṣapaya duritaṁ drāgayo māmamuṁ te ||
ਅਰਥ:ऐसी दुर्लभ वस्तु सुलभता से हाथ में आ जाने पर भी, हाय, क्षुद्रबुद्धि मनुष्य शरीर, वाणी और मन से तुच्छ वस्तुओं को ही भजता है। हे विश्वमूर्ते! देवों से पूज्य आपके दोनों चरणों की मैं शरण लेता हूँ। हे वासुदेव! शीघ्र ही मेरे — इस शरणागत के — समस्त दुरित को नष्ट कर दीजिए।

Sit with a calm, devoted mind, picturing the Lord enshrined at Guruvayur as the visible form of Brahman. These two verses may also be chanted on their own as a heartfelt prayer of surrender and for relief from suffering, in the spirit in which Bhattathiri composed them.
