The Saptashloki is framed by a conversation between Lord Shiva and the Divine Mother. Shiva asks her to reveal the simplest and most certain means by which beings of the Kali age can attain their goals. In response, the Goddess discloses seven verses drawn from the Devi Mahatmya as the supreme distillation of her glory — a 'short Saptashati' that carries the protective force of the entire scripture for those unable to recite the whole.

Devotees across centuries have held that even when calamity strikes and there is no time for elaborate worship, a single heartfelt recitation of these seven verses brings the Mother's immediate protection. Many narrate being delivered from illness, lawsuits and danger by reciting the Saptashloki when the full Saptashati could not be completed.

ഓം അസ്യ ശ്രീദുര്ഗാസപ്തശ്ലോകീസ്തോത്രമന്ത്രസ്യ നാരായണ ഋഷിഃ, അനുഷ്ടുപ് ഛന്ദഃ, ശ്രീമഹാകാലീമഹാലക്ഷ്മീമഹാസരസ്വത്യോ ദേവതാഃ, ശ്രീദുര്ഗാപ്രീത്യര്ഥം സപ്തശ്ലോകീദുര്ഗാപാഠേ വിനിയോഗഃ ।
oṃ asya śrīdurgāsaptaślokīstotramantrasya nārāyaṇa ṛṣiḥ, anuṣṭup chandaḥ, śrīmahākālī-mahālakṣmī-mahāsarasvatyo devatāḥ, śrīdurgāprītyarthaṃ saptaślokīdurgāpāṭhe viniyogaḥ |
അർഥം:ॐ। श्रीदुर्गासप्तश्लोकी स्तोत्रमन्त्र के ऋषि नारायण हैं, छन्द अनुष्टुप् है, देवता श्रीमहाकाली-महालक्ष्मी-महासरस्वती हैं; श्रीदुर्गा की प्रसन्नता के लिए इसका पाठ किया जाता है।
ശിവ ഉവാച — ദേവി ത്വം ഭക്തസുലഭേ സര്വകാര്യവിധായിനി । കലൌ ഹി കാര്യസിദ്ധ്യര്ഥമുപായം ബ്രൂഹി യത്നതഃ ॥
śiva uvāca — devi tvaṃ bhaktasulabhe sarvakāryavidhāyini | kalau hi kāryasiddhyarthamupāyaṃ brūhi yatnataḥ ||
അർഥം:शिव बोले — हे देवि, भक्तों को सुलभ, समस्त कार्यों को सिद्ध करने वाली! कलियुग में कार्यसिद्धि का उपाय यत्नपूर्वक मुझे बताइए।
ദേവ്യുവാച — ശൃണു ദേവ പ്രവക്ഷ്യാമി കലൌ സര്വേഷ്ടസാധനമ് । മയാ തവ ച സ്നേഹേനാപ്യമ്ബാസ്തുതിഃ പ്രകാശ്യതേ ॥
devyuvāca — śṛṇu deva pravakṣyāmi kalau sarveṣṭasādhanam | mayā tava ca snehenāpyambāstutiḥ prakāśyate ||
അർഥം:देवी बोलीं — हे देव, सुनिए, मैं कलियुग में समस्त इष्ट की सिद्धि का साधन बताती हूँ। आपके प्रति स्नेह से ही अम्बा की यह स्तुति प्रकट की जा रही है।
ഓം ജ്ഞാനിനാമപി ചേതാംസി ദേവീ ഭഗവതീ ഹി സാ । ബലാദാകൃഷ്യ മോഹായ മഹാമായാ പ്രയച്ഛതി ॥ ൧॥
oṃ jñānināmapi cetāṃsi devī bhagavatī hi sā | balādākṛṣya mohāya mahāmāyā prayacchati || 1||
അർഥം:1. वह भगवती देवी महामाया ज्ञानियों के भी चित्त को बलपूर्वक खींचकर मोह में डाल देती है।
ദുര്ഗേ സ്മൃതാ ഹരസി ഭീതിമശേഷജന്തോഃ സ്വസ്ഥൈഃ സ്മൃതാ മതിമതീവ ശുഭാം ദദാസി । ദാരിദ്ര്യദുഃഖഭയഹാരിണി കാ ത്വദന്യാ സര്വോപകാരകരണായ സദാര്ദ്രചിത്താ ॥ ൨॥
durge smṛtā harasi bhītimaśeṣajantoḥ svasthaiḥ smṛtā matimatīva śubhāṃ dadāsi | dāridryaduḥkhabhayahāriṇi kā tvadanyā sarvopakārakaraṇāya sadārdracittā || 2||
അർഥം:2. हे दुर्गे! स्मरण करने पर आप समस्त प्राणियों के भय को हर लेती हैं; स्वस्थ (सुखी) पुरुषों द्वारा स्मरण किए जाने पर अत्यन्त शुभ बुद्धि प्रदान करती हैं। हे दारिद्र्य, दुःख और भय को हरने वाली! सबका उपकार करने में सदा आर्द्रचित्त आपके अतिरिक्त और कौन है?
സര്വമങ്ഗലമാങ്ഗല്യേ ശിവേ സര്വാര്ഥസാധികേ । ശരണ്യേ ത്ര്യമ്ബകേ ഗൌരി നാരായണി നമോഽസ്തു തേ ॥ ൩॥
sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike | śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo'stu te || 3||
അർഥം:3. हे समस्त मंगलों की मंगलमयी, कल्याणी शिवे, सब अर्थों को सिद्ध करने वाली, शरण देने वाली, त्रिनेत्रा गौरी, नारायणी! आपको नमस्कार है।
ശരണാഗതദീനാര്തപരിത്രാണപരായണേ । സര്വസ്യാര്തിഹരേ ദേവി നാരായണി നമോഽസ്തു തേ ॥ ൪॥
śaraṇāgatadīnārtaparitrāṇaparāyaṇe | sarvasyārtihare devi nārāyaṇi namo'stu te || 4||
അർഥം:4. हे शरणागत, दीन और आर्तजनों के रक्षण में तत्पर, सबकी पीड़ा हरने वाली देवी नारायणी! आपको नमस्कार है।
സര്വസ്വരൂപേ സര്വേശേ സര്വശക്തിസമന്വിതേ । ഭയേഭ്യസ്ത്രാഹി നോ ദേവി ദുര്ഗേ ദേവി നമോഽസ്തു തേ ॥ ൫॥
sarvasvarūpe sarveśe sarvaśaktisamanvite | bhayebhyastrāhi no devi durge devi namo'stu te || 5||
അർഥം:5. हे सर्वस्वरूपा, सर्वेश्वरी, समस्त शक्तियों से युक्त देवी! हमें सब भयों से बचाइए; हे दुर्गा देवी, आपको नमस्कार है।
രോഗാനശേഷാനപഹംസി തുഷ്ടാ രുഷ്ടാ തു കാമാന് സകലാനഭീഷ്ടാന് । ത്വാമാശ്രിതാനാം ന വിപന്നരാണാം ത്വാമാശ്രിതാ ഹ്യാശ്രയതാം പ്രയാന്തി ॥ ൬॥
rogānaśeṣānapahaṃsi tuṣṭā ruṣṭā tu kāmān sakalānabhīṣṭān | tvāmāśritānāṃ na vipannarāṇāṃ tvāmāśritā hyāśrayatāṃ prayānti || 6||
അർഥം:6. प्रसन्न होने पर आप समस्त रोगों का नाश करती हैं और रुष्ट होने पर भी समस्त अभीष्ट कामनाओं को पूर्ण करती हैं। आपकी शरण में आए हुए लोग विपत्ति में नहीं पड़ते, बल्कि वे स्वयं दूसरों के आश्रय बन जाते हैं।
സര്വാബാധാപ്രശമനം ത്രൈലോക്യസ്യാഖിലേശ്വരി । ഏവമേവ ത്വയാ കാര്യമസ്മദ്വൈരിവിനാശനമ് ॥ ൭॥
sarvābādhāpraśamanaṃ trailokyasyākhileśvari | evameva tvayā kāryamasmadvairivināśanam || 7||
അർഥം:7. हे तीनों लोकों की अखिलेश्वरी! जैसे आपने समस्त बाधाओं का शमन किया है, वैसे ही हमारे शत्रुओं का भी नाश कीजिए।

सप्तश्लोकी दुर्गा പാരായണ വിധി
Sit facing east or north before an image of Durga. Begin with the viniyoga (rishi-chandas-devata) statement, then chant the Shiva-uvacha and Devi-uvacha framing verses, followed by the seven main shlokas. It may be repeated 7, 11 or 108 times. Many devotees recite it daily as a substitute for the full Durga Saptashati, especially when time is short. End by praying for the protection of all beings.
